ah jeez..  wall

Im just fecking well fed up of it.

I locked the topic because I couldnt be arsed/dont have the time to be writing replies like this.

To be honest - Im just getting bloody well fed up of constantly having to justify ourselves to one party or another.

I haven't got the time. I constantly risk getting into trouble at work, and at home just trying to keep abreast of the new topics, replies. Let alone replying to the ones Im interested in.
Let a bloody well lone moderating peoples petty personal beefs/abuse/trolling, then having to fecking well justify it to a whole host other busy bodies who think that UKc is some god given right.

I seriously discussed with bubba, taking the whole site down for a few days with a front page banner telling people that we couldn't be arsed any more.

Clearly a bit childish in hindsight - but indicative of the way me, bubs and underground where feeling at the time.

So will you just shut up, go away and leave the mods alone to get on with their job.

I could ban you for 24 hours, just cause your pissing me off. but Im not going to - cause I'd probably get a whole heap of annoying shit from a few other "freedom of speech" nazi's

Why dont you find a topic to write some constructive comments on, Start a topic about a cave your intersted in and just stop bloody well moaning about the mods.

I replied courteously and politely in a non-offensive manner - why was this deleted ?

Cheers,
Andy

I really think that that is an accurate precis of my arguments. You have convinced me not to post further on this topic, or indeed on this forum.
Bye.

Cheers,
Andy

What is a bannable offence?

I had little option, since the topic was locked.

Where else should I post a reply to Sam's comments ? Since the thread was arbitrarily locked, silencing any reply or further discussion of the topic.

I suggest you read the forum acceptable use policy:
What is a bannable offence?....Arguing with moderator's decisions on the public forum. Feel free to contact the mod team if you disagree with a decision but do it privately

If you read my comments, I am not suggesting they are not removed, I am suggesting that deletions are acknowledged.
I know that is what you're suggesting i'm just saying that's it's not really practical to do so.

Bubba - we were having a reasoned conversation that was civilised and chilled out. I really resent receiving abuse from Sam, then having my posts deleted, then having more abuse from Sam, then Sam's posts deleted (which were offensive) and then being threatened with being banned.

I do not believe that I was questioning moderators decisions on the original topic. I questioned why I could not answer abusive comments from Sam.

I really think that some of the recent posters on this topic are too heated for this to be a reasoned discussion. I believe the reason Sam quoted for banning me was

Which I didn't find in the acceptable use, although threats and insults are.

I am also now going to leave the forum and will be deleting my profile.

Thanks for all the hard work in maintaining the forums. I really appreciate it. Bye.

Cheers,
Andy

Oh god, more dummy spitting. Are you going or not?

If you can't accept that this is a moderated forum then i suggest you go back to using uk.rec.caving or something similar.

I agree with Sam tbh - every now and again somebody like you will complain about censorship, nazi moderators, etc, etc. All i can say is get over it - i've been moderating this place and ukb for over 5 years now. No, not everybody is totally happy with the way we run things here, but on the whole I feel that we have a reasonably valuable resource in this site without a lot of the abuse, drivel and backbiting that you will get in an uncensored forum.

Anyway, since you feel so hard done by, and that you're too censored then ultimately you're only really going to be happy going somewhere else or starting up your own such forum. In fact, maybe you should try running an "uncensored" forum and see how far you get with it. Allow guest posting and don't do any moderation. In amongst the abuse, the spam and the trolling you might get a little useful caving information - have a look at uk.rec.caving and you'll see what i mean.

uk.rec.caving laughed at us when we started up and one of their main points, like yours was regarding censorship/moderation. Well take a look at this place and that place and who's fucking laughing now?

No, we don't delete profiles. It messes up the flow of old topics. All you need to do is just not type ukcaving.com into your browser - it's that easy.

In the interest of openness, and to answer the accusations of heavy handed moderation, here is a copy of the last month's moderation log. Yep, i guess we're all just power crazed censor-nazis.

I went underground while you lot were having this 'discussion'.

Think about this: consider how fortunate we all are to be able to post anything into a forum in the first place. Think how few opportunities there were to do this only ten years ago. Having this facility and the huge amount of freedom we have to post just about anything we like (see Whitelackington  ;) ), goes hand in hand with the moral duty to do so responsibly and with due respect for others. Inevitably we all post stupid things that we shouldn't - we are (mostly) all human, and are almost bound to behave badly at some time or another (Elaine excepted).

So just be bloody grateful that

(a) the forum is here in the first place,
(b) you can post pretty well whatever you damn well like, and
(c) when we do post something stupid there are people prepared to sort it out, take few thanks for it, but a considerable amount of undeserved flak.

And, yes, as they are human too, Mods will also make bad decisions from time to time, just as we mere mortals do.

Just as a matter of interest why was the capping discussion / question deleted? I was vaguely interested to see what types of pogging bars other people were using.

Note - I have no intention of commenting on the reason, whatever it may be!

I think it was deleted due to the rather sensitive nature of discussing things that go bang in today's paranoid climate - Sam will answer more fully though because it was his decision and i believe he discussed it with the people involved in the topic.

You will also see some members deleted in that log - they are people who are requesting signups but who are obviously spammers, not existing "real" members. From time to time i will also clear out member profiles that have never been posted from, eg 0 posts and 6 months old, etc.

I just had to look....

And to think that 10 years ago, it was considered cutting edge caving-chat, even though it was mostly gobby americans moaning about nothing. Well done Bubba for keeping everything sane on here

Sigh....

One or two of my posts have been deleted in the past, including one just recently. I don't have a problem with that. In one case I got a PM by way of explanation (thanks!). In the other case I didn't, but all my post said was to advise the guys having an argument to cool it. Once the moderators arrived on the scene, my post was of course redundant and got cleaned up with the rest. Am I all worked up about this? No.

I'm a global moderator on another forum (a caving forum in Norway) and the one and only time I have ever had to intervene in a discussion I was also portrayed as a power-crazy control freak. But sometimes a moderator has to....moderate.

I thnk 99% of us think that the moderators on this forum do a good job and we appreciate what you do very much.

The log was very interesting, but the links don't appear to work for me.  :(

That's 'cos it's only a screen grab image not an actual page of html.

The moderators do a cracking job, let them get on with it or maybe they will all throw the towel in and then we can all go to one of the other magnificent caving forums that are available
