My son and I were given access to one of the chalk mines located below Emmer Green in Reading. This one lies below and is accessed from the land owned by the 89th Scouts Group in Emmer Green. The mine in total is several hundred meters in length and besides as a source of chalk for brick making, historically has been used for the storage of valuable documents and council possessions during WWII. There is a small chamber with corrugated shelters constructed that were used to store the documents and had an armed guard at the time.
