Charity Hitchiking. Grateful for any Sponsorship. :D

Hey guys,

I'm fundraising for Link Community Development, an organisation that helps to develop underprivileged communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

The activity to be sponsored in question is a 1000 mile hitch-hike from my location in Plymouth to the Croatian border. All money sponsored goes to charity and I'd be incredibly grateful if anyone could spare a quid or two for a good cause. The link below will take you to my fundraising page:

Many Thanks!

Josh

I hate these sort of sponsored events, ones that say hey, I'm going on a really cool holiday but if I say it's for charidee someone else can pay for it.

Still at least this one isn't adding to the ruination of Kilimanjaro.

Every year handfuls of sponsorship forms come around the office from people wanting to be sponsored to walk or jog a mile. They are the ones which really get my goat. Lazy tw@ts who can't even be bothered to do anything involving even a slight amount of effort.

Hang on Graham, this lad's at least getting off his backside and trying to do something positive to help people with serious problems. Can't you at least offer a little encouragement?

In this case, Pitlamp, no I can't. Why does he have to go to Croatia in order to raise money for an African charity? If he's paying his own expenses then he can reduce the environmental impact of his fundraising to zero & simply hand over his potential costs to the charity. If someone else is paying then, well, 'nuff said.

so in that case graham i should be able to ask you for sponsership for the 75mile cycle i'm doing this year and for the 100km walk in 20hrs next year then (i don't think either of those will be a 'holiday', and they will require large amounts of effort)  (y) (y)

Good luck Josh! Don't pay attention to Graham he's the forum crab  :tease:

Careful Amy - Graham does also post a great deal of extremely valuable comments on here.

Folks, if you look at Josh's charity page it does explain the reasoning behind the choice of challenge and also explains what happens to any money raised. I don't think it's appropriate for this kind of creditable effort to be denigrated.

Just because someone posts useful stuff now again, does that mean we're not allowed to criticize him? But I know exactly where Graham is coming from, and I pretty much agree with him. Sponsor me to walk to Macchu Picchu; ride along the Great Wall; climb Kilimanjaro. Bah humbug!

My brother has recently walked the entire length of the South West Coast Path in 25 days. No day off, not even Christmas Day. An average of 25 miles per day, and the equivalent of Everest 4 times. I didn't think he would do it, but he did, in some appalling weather; and has raised over ?7000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Somehow, hitch-hiking doesn't really seem like much of an effort to me. Years ago it was how many students spent their holidays.

Anyway, have fun.

Having said my piece, I wasn't going to venture into this again, but I have been reminded of someone I met a couple of years ago. This guy rowed the Atlantic. he did it for charidee, but guess what, the trip cost way more than he actually raised.

Criticise away. I have firm opinions on a number of things, if I cannot defend those opinions against robust criticism, then I examine them & see whether they should be changed.

My tuppence worth....
Surely it would be better to do something constuctive to earn sponsorship.
Why not mow a dozen disabled people's lawns or dig a pensioners garden over?
I see no point in running a marathon or rowing the Atlantic except for a sense of personal achievement.

. . . for which you have my great respect Graham, even though I occasionally disagree with you.

Sure, the world would be a poorer place if we all agreed about everything.

You won't stay too smart if you keeping trying to ruin your education system. Seriously, can you do something about those backward idiots who want to teach so-called 'creationism' in science lessons in four states?
