Hi,

I'm after finding some cheap but defective thermals, Obviously you get what you pay for but i don't want to spend a lot on something to use camping underground...

Does anybody know of any cheaper and easily found thermals that do the job?

Thanks

Joe

If it's defective thermals you want, try here:  ;)

Seriously though, they have some nice stuff, and their "substandard" items are barely noticable as such, yet at a fraction of the retail price. I'm not sure how cheap you want when you say cheap, but I have a thermal top and balaclava from them which I've been very happy with.

Particularly if it's for camping, I'd definitely opt for Merino wool. Less smelly. Aldi occasionally has them for cheap as well, although it's probably not the best season for them at the moment.

I've used pound shop vests and long johns for ages, not suffered from hypothermia yet, if you are near north Derbyshire, try the cheap shop near traffic lights in Glossop.

Most of my thermals come from Aldi (or Lidl). For caving underneath a furry or especially a wetsuit their "compression" sportswear is great.

You need to keep an eye on their weekly specials, though. Offers come and go very quickly Wrong time of year at the moment.

+1 for the Subzero 'substandard' garments. I've bought a couple of things from there (Factor 2 top, balaclava) and the only 'defect' I could find was where they've cut the label to note it as substandard!

I can't fault the performance either - the Factor 2 top and an ill-fitting furry kept me going in a ~0?C cave (not camping, but slow paced 20 hour trips).

Alpkit are doing Merino wool underwear. I am trying to destroy some shorts at the moment. They are doing good considering the extreme conditions they are being put under. Or should I say over?

Cotswold Outdoor are doing good prices on the Helly Hansen striped, traditional thermal tops, 15 pounds I think.

go outdoors have some good value stuff, or look out for lidls or Aldi's deals. with aldi you can sign up for a weekly notice telling you whats on offer, but get in quick, lidls seems that you just have to go in and see

I get mine from Sports Direct or Mountain Warehouse, as both seem to have permenent sales on - cheap and cheerful but do the job.

I've got a pair of Berghaus 'Argentium' synthetic long johns that I wear for winter walking, climbing, camping, caving etc. They're warm, comfortable, and seemingly indestructable. I think they're inexpensive compared to merino leggings.

Also Mountain Warehouse sometimes have their merino/synthetic mix thermal ski-type tops on sale - I got one this year and it's super warm, a good fit, and washes better than pure merino. It is a bit sweatier, though, and smellier than merino.
