Coniston Parking

Hello Folks

I'll be up in Coniston between Christmas and New Year in the van. A friend is interested in an easy mine trip but has recently had knee surgery and can't walk far. A stroll into Deep Level would seem to fit the bill, however I'm not sure he'd manage the walk up from Coniston.

I've driven up the track before when staying in a cottage and for the NAMHO meet but I have a recollection that the road is technically Private. Are there any issues with driving up and parking near the mines?

Cheers

It's complicated. The road is not a public highway. But there are lots of properties up there that enjoy vehicular access. How an angry person would be able to know which property you intend to visit I don't know. Almost all of the land is owned by Rydal Estates, but the owner of the old mill / wedding venue has blocked off lots of parking areas that aren't his. United Utilities also own a bit of the land up past the locked gate. When we did NAMHO, we came to an arrangement with the owner of the mill / wedding venue and parked on his land. All that said, I don't know what to recommend apart from walking up!

Thanks Chris

Walking up would obviously be preferable but unfortunately probably not an option for my friend. Sounds like we'll just have to take it as it comes.
