Trip: Conniston Copper Mines
Date: 01/11/08
Present: Pete Martin, Lin Marting (for the walk up and looking after their friend), Barry Hulatt, Meg and Mark Whyte, Andy Morse, Rian and Andy Kendal, Robin Gray.
We had the most brilliant AGM weekend organised by Pete and Lin Martin in Coniston. We had many drop outs for the trip itself along the way and only the really fit, hard, tough and totally committed made it to the top of the copper mine entrance. We brought the most afflicted up in a handily placed wheel barrow. He He.
The entrance
Barry in his new green/yellow Warmbac
Tony Holland and his two fantastic side kicks (sorry but if I knew their names I would mention them) led us through the most exhilarating 3 x 100 foot pitches.
I am pleased to say I can announce I have conquered my recent phobia of abseiling and did all of them and am very chuffed. We spent along time enjoying a different sort of environment to the usual Mendip cave we are used to. What I can say is the blue copper sulphate formations were awesome and the man made aspects of the cave totally alien and fascinating. We spent a good 5 1/2 hours photographing, exploring and generally enjoying this fascinating place.
My scurion is'nt blinding he said....
AGM Dinner
There were many contenders for the Farter of the Year award but this year the award goes to me for a violent affair in Corronch in Vercours this year that cleared the cave in record time and killed small animals- Mark won it jointly with me but just for being noisy. Here we are practicing for next year and holding our award.
Wonderful singing and folk music was performed by the funny four some- you know you are (the band with no name- Robin, Sue, Snab, Anita) sang the now famous One Eyed Cormorant song and many more now well known ones in caving circles.
