Thanks to Dave R's input, the boulder I inadvertently move a couple of Christmases ago has now been cleared and the cave is open again.
The wooden lid has rotted away and I have used a wheel barrow to cover the hole. I will sort out a replacement lid, but certainly not before June at the earliest.
