Hello,

Does anyone know how many CROW affected caves there are on Mendip (if any)?  This may have been spoken about before.

Please can we keep the answers nice and civilized.

SK

Just to put the record straight, because some people are still saying there are only 2 sites on Mendip on CROW access land:

U R quite right martinr, I was only referring to the locked ones in SSSIs. There are 151 sites on access land, 128 on SSSIs and officially only 7 on access land which is a SSSI and have locked gates. But as I said above it was reported at the latest BCA C&A meeting that there are probably 10-15 in the latter category.

Martin & Mel,

Yes there are 151 caves that have been identified as having entrances on access land on Mendip, and a handful of those currently have gates.  I will however re-iterate that the CSCC conservation and access officer stated that he only had concerns (from a conservation point of view) from open access on four of those.

The OP asked how many sites on Mendip are on CROW land. The answer is 151.

Can this thread be locked now, as the OP has his answer?

How many of these sites are of interest to cavers ( or even members of CSCC?, CCC?, CNCC?, DCA?) or generally BCA? I am very aware that there are sites in other areas that are just 'holes in the ground', none of which are interesting to voting members.----

So there are 4 caves with some concern and  there are 147 caves on Mendip that would benefit by having better access. And there are about two and a half thousand in the rest of the country which would get better access and quite a lot which would get access where there is none at present. Perhaps now the OP has the answer.

Steady on Simon, We are still trying to get the National Cave Database sorted, not finished in the Peak District yet, lots of gritstone shelters to do yet! is it all sorted in the other areas?

I was asking how many of the caves listed were of relevance to BCA voters? the pro-forma of the BCA database would give an indication.
