Anyone know anything about the dig in the lay-by halfway up Crowdecote bank? Went past it today & after many years neglect someone seems to have taken up the challenge again - 'bout time too, it always looked interesting.
I first saw it around 20yrs back. About 10 yrs ago someone had a real go at it with a monorail system for removing sludge. In the end I guess it just got too squalid. Someone seems to have really tidied it up in the last month or so, moving the old spoil heap and placing it behind a new dry stone wall. Good on 'em, whoever they are!
It's been dug by the Orpheus at various periods since the 60's and is a descending mud-filled tube, from the late 70's known as Democratic Dig. It tends to get waterlogged from time to time, but OCC is currently quite active there. Call at Parsley Hay for details.
