Replace with "I don't; because they work well".

I wasn't trying to be pedantic, just trying to point out that the statement is hard to prove; I'm sceptical of your claim, modified or not. There are a few caves that aren't gated that are big enough to get lost in but no one ever seems to do so (other than "proper" cavers!) Anyway, we don't generally gate off mountains or rock faces just because they're dangerous.

I'm more easily persuaded by the conservation argument, and it does seem in this case that a good argument can be made for gating on that basis.
