Descent 300

The connection between Draughting Hole and Missed Pot has given us an enormous maze cave in the North Pennines. In Descent 300, you can read Pete Talling's account of the exploration of this complex system.

Just quick comment about a typo. On page 10, "North", "New entrance to Lancaster Hole", the grid reference is given as SD 3666 8082.

This could be a result, in the eastings, of a misreading of two different formats of grid references.

Lancaster Hole itself is at SD 6640 8072, 250m east would be SD 6665 8072.

Using purely digits, referenced to the zero south-west of Land's End, that position is 36665, 48072, which is where extraneous "3" may have come from.

I note that there is a stream sink at SD 66661 80722. Side-by-side aerial and Openstreetmap

Maybe the person who sent it in, did not want us to know the location? Or it's a really long trip of 30km to get into the Easegill system.

Just wondering: How many issues of No.1, and indeed the top 10 were printed? Was it a single run each time, or were more added as demand grew?

In Descent 300, Chris Scaife recounts spending one hundred hours of solitude as he investigated the sea caves on a wild and unihabited Scottish island.

I've been in a few of the raised beach caves on Islay. They were often floored by a swamp and wild goat turds. I thought about this when contemplating a foray down the west side of Jura. I think ticks might be an unwanted distraction as well.

Sid Perou was, quite simply, the most important film-maker in the caving world. In Descent 300, Geoff Yeadon writes an obituary for the great man, who has died at the age of 87.

Hello, I'm looking for magazines dealing with cave. Is Decent worth subscription? My main concern is abroad expedition, new caving trend, surveying. Since I'm Korean and couldn't get any contact with UK cavers, it was a bit hard to search those infos.
If there are other great alternatives, please let me know what they are.

Hello KCESjun,

Descent has subscribers all over the world and, although we are primarily focused on exploration by British cavers, often includes reports from SE Asia.

You can look at the contents pages for our feature articles by browsing our back issues here:

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us through the website.
