Dont forget that when passages were blasted out they had to be 're-dialled' afterwards. This meant making the floor up with waste to give the desired gradient for drainage, between 1 in 90 and 1 in 120. So it was usual practice to leave a sort of 'ditch' on the one side to keep the main floor drained. This explains why often when wading through a mine passage the water is slightly deeper on one side than the other.
