Special effects.

Photo below, taken with NO flash, lit from the front with a nova 3 at the top and from behind at the base with a mini q40.
fujifinepix 6mb camera on zoom, hand held no tripod.
Just thought it was an interesting effect.
(The stal isnt really orange and blue it is in fact white)

That's a very interesting effect.  It looks remarkably sharp for no tripod and a presumably long exposure.  Can you post a link to a higher res copy?  Did you lean against something to steady your hand whilst taking it?

Its the courtesan in Aggy (the base of it)
The camera was on auto, bog standard digital , and although JS had left his tripod in the cave, i didnt need to lean on anything, or use it.
I will put on a link to a higher res this pm.zoom in on the droplet at the bottom...its awesome... :)

Will someone let me know if the link doesnt work.  :-[

Link works fine, and I'm very impressed with the quality of the photo as you were using the camera in auto, I do like using electric "bulb" for lighting as it gives a much warmer feel to the picture with a much wider spread of light and no sharp shadows. Although this does not work well in larger areas.
And yes the droplet at the bottom really makes the picture. Hopefully more pictures will follow now that you have the knack.

Wish I'd taken that.  I have done some limited work with a Nova 3 and the white light gives a good image. Gonzo has really developed the subject and if you have been to Hidden Earth in the last couple of years you will have seen his work.  Candles give a nice effect if you arrange them around a cave passage and can make somewhere fairly uninteresting look quite special. Haven't used them for years because of the hassle in setting them all up.  An exposure for 2 mins at f5.6 for 64ASA film is what i used as that was the originally suggested exposure in an article in Speleologist 40 years ago.  If the subject is static  there is scope for really creative lighting and in fact falling water would look good too.

Quote, (The stal isnt really orange and blue it is in fact white)

This is caused by the different temperatures of the light sources, a very interesting issue!
Ever taken a snap inside a room lit by electric light, looking through a window or door to outside?
Depending on the "white balance" setting used, the inside may look natural, whilst the outside appears blue-ish, and conversely, the outside may look natural, but the inside looks very yellowish.
Had some interesting times re this issue, taking piccies in Ingleborough Cave with flash & the tungsten light in the cave, we needed yellow filters on the flashes to make the lighting all the same "temperature".
Another one was filming a Ceilidh band with Sid, multiple cameras were used, and all had to have the white balance "synced up", i.e. all cameras were set up whilst metering white balance against a piece of white card, this avoided shot transitions between cameras changing colour on screen in the edit.
Most people will probably never mess about with the white balance settings on their camera, but it is worth having a go with.
Take a look at this piccie of Gaping Gill main chamber, the lighting is by the BPC's floodlights, white balance biased toward these), see how "blue" and cold  the daylight looks coming down the main shaft.

Cheers & TTFN, see you all at Hidden Earth I hope?

Nice Pic, Menacer: here's another without flash, just lit with a Nova and one of the early Petzl LED lights (blue tinge on LHS).

Yer nice pics.  (y)

As LED lights get better and better stuff like this is just gunna get easier. Especially as the cameras get better as well. Imagine a day when we won't need bulky flashguns and tripods to light up cave passages. My camera has Image Stabilisation in the lens which works a treat.

This shot below was handheld for 0.7 of a second and is perfectly sharp, just lit with his and my duo's. There's no doubting that cave photography's getting technically easier...
