Hi,
Does anyone have any information regarding the exploration of Bagshawe in the thirties and forties, especially any done by Bob Leakey.
Thanks Andy

Courtesy of Paul Chandler I included some of his late father's photographs of Bagshawe taken in the 1940s/early 1950s in the last issue of The Derbyshire Caver, if that's of any interest (nothing related to Bob Leakey though).

There are also a couple of photos in a publication they have in the Castleton Visitor Centre. It's a large format collection of b/w photographs entitles "The Peak District in the 1930's" or similar. It looks like a school trip ; one youth has a miner's lamp, another just a candle.

Re Bob Leakey. He was BSA first and SWCC later so I imagine his records are in the BCRA archives.

Bob would tell me of the time he and another caver, whose name I could not now recall would explore the cave to a river and beyond, and on one occasion the water in the river rose and meant they needed to spend the night there sleeping untill an exit was possible.....

It was a Cave he spoke fondly of......

In those days if someone found themselves caught down a cave due to flood waters they would just wait it out and exit after the floods receded.....

Richard.
