    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

The world war 2 bunker thingies on Black Down always give me a feeling of pride and creepiness mixed together.

anywhere my wife and kids aren't is good!
in summer I used to take  a book and coffee in a falsk and sit up by one of our local entrances - love;y and peaceful.
Sorry - I missed the Mendip reference.
You could just come into Swildons with us if you're asking for the reason I think you are.

About 568 472  (it is Eastings first isn't it?) - just to the west of a crossroads of footpaths by a gate that goes down the hill to Tynings Riding Stables. There are two others further East of this along the same contour and close to the field boundary. They aren't marked on the map.

Thanks, I wonder if this is part of the decoy Bristol which was laid out along Black Down.
I shall check this out next time I am there.

A closely related pastime - on Mendip or elsewhere like when I'm on holiday is to get the local OS 1:25K and search the landscape for features that look like they may be interesting (which to me usually means geological or archaeo-industrial) - and then head out on a mission to find them - always a fun adventure and a chance to see new places.

It was doing this sort of thing that got me into caving in my local area in the first place.

On Mendip alone my mental list of odd little places to visit is getting pretty long - I'll be an old man by the time I'm done.

Yes it was a Bristol decoy. Am I right in thinking there was one around Charterhouse as well?

Westhay Nature Reserve on the Somerset Levels.  Go there about 4:30 pm and watch the starlings.  Incredible!

Quite agree, but last Sunday we went there and spent two hours waiting for the buggers to flock and they had gone elsewhere!! Bloody freezing it was too. And I lost an expensive pair of sunglasses. 8)
Still had the marvellous site of about 100 Wagtails all feeding in the same place.
I would have to also agree with Cap'n Chris. Ebbor Gorge does it for me too. (y)

Isn't nature wonderful.  If they're not at Westhay they might be at Shapwick or Ham Wall or Catcott Lows or at an impromptu hippy festival in Glastonbury.

Huh?  Dunno what happened there.  I was probably distracted by the thought of 3 million turkeys wheeling through the sky and then landing heavily in the reedbeds.

Hello Gus, I know you are keen  ;) on birds.
Do turkeys fly? :doubt:
