For the Yorkshire experts, where was I last weekend?!?

Hey all,

Last weekend we had a club trip to Yorkshire (Lincoln Caving Club). Original plans were to do Long Kin West as there were only 4 of us.  A couple of others turned up at the last minute and had brought rope with them and as the weather was quite grey and showery a few of us decided to keep warm by having a play in Pillar Holes rather than wait in the cold waiting for others to descend Long Kin.  As it was a bit last minute change of plan I didn't have with me map or GPS but as Pillar Holes only 180 metre East of Long Kin and following the line of shake holes surely we couldn't miss it!

We did! We walked right past it! I'm  curious as to the hole in the ground we found tho.  We found a swallow hole at about grid ref 7360 7222.  We knew it wasn't Pillar Holes as there wasn't a single anchor to be found!  Is an oval shaped hole approx 20m x 10m and approx 15m deep with a small stream entering in the north west corner. Very green and no obvious signs of descent. We decided to have a look anyway and rigged it by bowlining the rope to a large rock on the south eastern corner and re-belaying from a small rock bridge which only just reached a sling and Krab around at full stretch. The stream mainly seeped away  into stones in the South West corner.  We noticed some of it also headed into a fissure in the South East corner.  This seemed to go so I posted myself through feet first and immediately turned 90 degrees to be greeted by a rather tight looking (for me anyway!) rift which took the some of the stream.  I did notice a couple of newish plastic buckets strategically placed so someone thinks it's worth a look!!It looked like something out of 'Not for the Faint-Hearted!' and we weren't geared up for it so decided on an about turn!

On the way back to meet the guys at Long Kin we found Pillar Holes Number 1 and decided we had time for a  quick down and out!

Great day out had by all but just curious as to know what we found as I'ts my turn for club trip report!

Regards

Scott

We found Pillar Holes on the way back to meet the others so we got to have a look at that as well, so bonus!

I don't have anything to check the grid ref with but sounds like trapdoor pot to me. If it is, there is a series of pitches connected by quite tight thrutchy crawls and ends with the megatron pitch, a good 65m shaft and large chamber, quite a contrast to the rest of the cave.

Thanks for info Joe, I want to go for another look to see where it goes, so if anyone can give me a heads up on kit I need to take with me then advice thankfully received!  Is the rigging all off naturals can anyone tell me? We couldn't find any anchors or spits.

Scott.

I was down there earlier this year, the entrance pitch is rigged like you did, the rest was on fixed spit hangers. It is in not for the faint hearted, with some harder squeezes, srt kit off jobs, but are short. There's a friend of mines Petzl bobbin in there somewhere too, watch out for holes when kitting up!

Not familiar with the intricacies of Newby Moss, but if you were walking in the direction of Pillar then it won't be Trapdoor as that is the opposite direction (NW from Long Kin West).

Grid ref puts it near to P2/Newby Moss Pot area, but even though the grid ref is beyond I'll have a guess at Fluted Hole, which has been dug a little since NC2 came out, has a small stream entering. I seem to recall a narrow rift leading to a pitch, which Pete went down to retrieve a ladder for someone (I think it was Fluted although I may be mistaken, many years ago, so hazy memory!)

Dunc that is a very good point, Scott you would've been in the wrong direction for pillar, just the description sounded right to me. Thanks for the offer but I will be away caving in France then. Have a good trip if you do go, even if it's not the hole you found.

Ye, that'll probably be the one, was a long time ago (10+ years back?), can't even remember why we were up on the moss and how we came to walk past that hole..  :doubt:
