Hey all,
Last weekend we had a club trip to Yorkshire (Lincoln Caving Club). Original plans were to do Long Kin West as there were only 4 of us. A couple of others turned up at the last minute and had brought rope with them and as the weather was quite grey and showery a few of us decided to keep warm by having a play in Pillar Holes rather than wait in the cold waiting for others to descend Long Kin. As it was a bit last minute change of plan I didn't have with me map or GPS but as Pillar Holes only 180 metre East of Long Kin and following the line of shake holes surely we couldn't miss it!
We did! We walked right past it! I'm curious as to the hole in the ground we found tho. We found a swallow hole at about grid ref 7360 7222. We knew it wasn't Pillar Holes as there wasn't a single anchor to be found! Is an oval shaped hole approx 20m x 10m and approx 15m deep with a small stream entering in the north west corner. Very green and no obvious signs of descent. We decided to have a look anyway and rigged it by bowlining the rope to a large rock on the south eastern corner and re-belaying from a small rock bridge which only just reached a sling and Krab around at full stretch. The stream mainly seeped away into stones in the South West corner. We noticed some of it also headed into a fissure in the South East corner. This seemed to go so I posted myself through feet first and immediately turned 90 degrees to be greeted by a rather tight looking (for me anyway!) rift which took the some of the stream. I did notice a couple of newish plastic buckets strategically placed so someone thinks it's worth a look!!It looked like something out of 'Not for the Faint-Hearted!' and we weren't geared up for it so decided on an about turn!
On the way back to meet the guys at Long Kin we found Pillar Holes Number 1 and decided we had time for a quick down and out!
Great day out had by all but just curious as to know what we found as I'ts my turn for club trip report!
Regards
Scott
We found Pillar Holes on the way back to meet the others so we got to have a look at that as well, so bonus!
