Goatchurch confusion

I think the reason why caves on the northern side of the Mendips receive less attention from diggers etc is that those on the plateau and on the south side are generally considered to have greater potential. The existing caves to the south are longer, usually take more water, and have considerable depth. When it comes to cavers and caves, size matters!

The steeper dip on the north side results, in very general terms, in shorter caves, taking less water, more choked with breakdown, and they are generally less appealing to the 'typical' caver. It does, however, result in some excellent little caves for gaining experience in caving. I am sure there's plenty more to be found to the north, if cavers were inclined to look for them.

Is the good draughting bit in the extension beyond the drainpipe, or is it in the bit where you come out of the drainpipe.
It is in the chamber at the end of the drain pipe. The drafting bit is at the top of the rift to your right (if you have your back to the drainpipe).

There are also a couple of dig sites in the very end chamber.....

I should also point out that you need UBSS permission on behalf of the landowner to do any digging in the cave.

Thanks Andy. yes I do realise that, just going to get my kids to have a look about, better to let them have a goal to find where its draughting instead of just crawling around.

Have no rational reason why, but I always get the heebie jeebies at the end of the Drainpipe. Goodness knows why - it's not particularly tight or unpleasant. Just have an incredible urge not to be there. Most bizarre - don't get it anywhere else.  :-\

Slightly off topic

Took a friend for a Halloween trip to Goatchurch last night.
As we left the Cave, two older locals (female) moved in with their  candles and (A bag full of woodstock!!!). They told us, they had been waiting a good hour outside the cave, for all Caver's to leave (Ourselves and Charterhouse), so God only knows what there plans were!!!!!!

That explains the witch marks!!! maybe they are more recent than everyone seems to think
Why? Why do you think things may have changed over the last few hundred years?

this is all hypothetical at the moment, I know absolutely nowt about geology/hydrology, me and the kids were thinking what if the stream that enters East Twin Swallet actually goes through Goatchurch at a much lower level than anyone has found at present to end up in Pierres pot. I believe that it has been proven that the east twin stream ends up going into Pierres and if you think about it Goatchurch is roughly in line with these two caves. if I'm way off the mark can someone let me know. Its food for thought though aint it.

I was kidding about the age of the witch marks, but there is obviously a yearly ritual taking place. (A few hundred years!) Maybe there is a link here to the witch marks.

A secret ritual perhaps??

You had to be there to appreciate it.

s'alright I wasn't being too serious either. The conclusion is that nutters who engage in wierd rituals have always been with us. I've seen 'em at various long barrows, stone circles & stuff.

It's that Julian Cope nutter from Teardrop Explodes and his whacky website the Modern Antiquarian where deranged people can find out about prehistoric features within the UK (and elsewhere) and then go visit them during the Equinoxstices to engage in third rate unfilfillling sexual fumblings while toking spliffs and nibbling sesame crackers. Often they leave stolen flowers behind - think I'm kidding? - visit Avelines, Goatchurch, Stanton Drew, West Kennet Long Barrow etc. etc. after any/all astrological "significant" events! - hey man, far out.

Yup, they are one of the main reasons that a gate went into Avelines.
