Hi,

I have a permit for Hammer Pot in Yorkshire in a couple of weeks and aside from the worry of not fitting through the entrance rifts the other worry I have is Stemple Rift as I heard that most of the stemples have rotted out. If this is true what are you supposed to stand on in the rift as the book says these are your footholds :?:
All suggestions welcome

Go for it my keen friend... just don't drop any tackle down the rift because getting it back is a bitch. My most vivid memory of Hammer is not the rift, but the final crawl before you get to the main drain... the thunderous sound created from the main drain reminds you that the gloopy passage you are in floods easily and quickly!

Enjoy.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah the guide book makes a point of not going into sludge crawl if you think it might rain. Guess that ones up to the great Yorkshire rain gods :!:

You've got a mention in this month's Descent haven't you?

Oh dear, I didn't realise my fame had spread that far. My copy of Descent for this month hasn't arrived yet.

So... short of the rescue effort... how was the mastercave at the end of Sludge Crawl?? Isn't it impressive after what it took to get there!

Frankly: No, not particularly. It's all a bit too cold and wet to sit and admire the grandeur; and although it takes a hell of a lot of water, it isn't particuarly nice cave passage in any way. However, the stal flow down the side of the final pitch is rather pretty.

So I take it that you won't be going back in a hurry?? Can you imagine going down there and diving it!! I just remember thinking that I was in a big drainpipe and was happy to be on the near side of Sludge Crawl.
