Judging by the shit now appearing on the forum,( porn Blog, Chinese Chemists) as opposed to the normal "Lively discussion", have we been the target of Hackers, ?.

I tried to use the 'report to moderator' button and got an error message saying 'you do not have access to this part of the forum'.

Someone's idea of fun??

Nah. It's either real people being paid to place such posts on relatively busy forums, or it's some kind of automated forum spamming bot that is clever enough to read the captcha images - they do exist.

The former can never really be stopped - all I can do is ban their IP.

The latter are quite easy to halt in their tracks by customising the required signup fields. There is a mod to do this but I've not implemented it because SMF 2.0 should be out quite soon which will have this facility built in.

We don't get that much spam compared to other forums i've seen really but any decent sized forum automatically becomes a target - not much can be done really.

That is surprising but it's possible that the post was being deleted as you tried to report it?

If this happens every time you try to report something please let me know and I'll investigate further - I do get regular reports from users so the functionality certainly works for some people.

Is there a chance that the appearance for a few weeks now of certain words as a result of the application of a certain word filter has raised the visibility of this site to the morons who post filth?

Just an idea.

I doubt it, Peter. These sort of attacks are perpetual and are mainly automated anyway.

On every post it says 'report to moderator' in the corner. You just click on that and off you go! You have to be logged in to do this though.

There has recently been an upsurge in these sorts of attacks to all SMF forums - see here for details if you're interested

I have put in place one of the measures recommended by the SMF team in the topic above. It should hopefully knock these spammers on the head for a while at least.
