POINT to ponder; we are considering education in a foreign country, key stages don't come into it, understanding of the arab psyche is required -- am I right Joe??

You are completely right, The current tend for Locals here (not just Oman, but the UAE, Saudi, Bahrain and Quatar and no doubt the rest too) is this new plastic fantastic disposable culture. It hasn't always been the way here and you will see the older (grandparent) generations clearing up after themselves and even others when the rubbish strays onto their path. However the younger generations, will drop everything anywhere instead of walk four steps to a bin. This is partly due to the knowledge that the government employs an army of cheap (foreign) labor to clear up after them and partly due to ignorance/lack of education.
Last year I was walking through the old capital part of Muscat and a small boy getting out a of car threw his sweet wrappers on the floor in front of father, Who completely ignored it. I turned and walked back over to them, picked them up and put them in the bin that was no mare than three or four meters away. At which they both laughed at me. The issue here is deep set in education and wont be a quick fix.

Most of the the caves with vertical pit entrances that are close to a road or village have been used as waste disposal systems for some time, these need a damned good clear out but its not going to be a nice job as they contain used pampers and rotting carcasses etc.

The part of the cave we want to clear is horizontal with two pitches to reach 'Crystal Chamber' where the rubbish has been hidden behind a rock. The age of the group will be +15 and we will take no more than 20. It is not a project we can feasibly do with 'Local' schools (as you saw with the 'teachers comment) and will have to be taken to 'Expat' schools for any progress.

Judi i will add your suggestions to the intro and get it sent out to some other schools this week. Thank you.

Thanks for the encouragement and help.
Your conscience and moral compass should be troubled by far more serious issues than littering! Those quaint foreign labourers the government employs are 21st century slaves!  In the 1990's  four other cavers and myself were employed on a rope access contract. Once we knew the situation we left vowing never to return. Although not before we went on strike, refusing to work until the site agent was sacked for beating the indian labourers who were working with us.  I also threw a hammer at him, and gave him a good slap!:the labourers cheered!(As they needed our skills he was sacked) At one point we were concerned about getting paid, arrested or being let out of the country!

So don't be like the other expats who don't give a f**k about their fellow humans as long as the money is right. I strongly urge you to open your eyes, have a real look around and follow your own conscience! It's your face you'll be looking at in the mirror for the next who knows how many years!

And do not desire corruption in the land. Indeed, God does not like corruptors. " Qur'an 28:77

And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption." Qur'an, 2:60

Devote thyself single-mindedly to the Faith, and thus follow the nature designed by Allah, the nature according to which He has fashioned mankind. There is no altering the creation of Allah.    Surah 30:30

Er, WHAT?  We are talking about teaching kids about caves and conservation in a Muslim country.    Having taught in Egypt (a Muslim country), I know the value of these quotes, they are exactly what might be needed to make a difference.

My two penyworth is to highlight that the limestone only exists because of the billions of shellfish etc. that go to make it up.  The sheer quantity of life that has existed on this planet is mind blowing, most people know coal and oil are products of long dead life forms but I think few even realize that chalk is never mind limestone and even iron stone are also.

Depending on ability range you can even do a bit of chemistry to explain the development of formations.

I'm not sure my moral compass is out so far really, not so far as the one on my watch which thinks everything is north anyway.

I don't know where you worked in this part of the world.
There was a problem a number of years ago in Oman where migrant workers were having there passports taken off them on arrival and being paid less than offered/promised. Fortunately this is now not happening, if it does then the company at fault gets closed down. It is totally illegal for company's to take and hold passports, and the minimum wages are enforced. Unlike the U.A.E where these crimes are still a common problem.

In 1970 slavery was abolished in Oman, People still have paid maids and drivers as you find in most countries.

If you want to get on your high horse about human rights, have a look into human trafficking in the UK which has been on the rise for years. Get out and raise awareness, make a donation to unseenuk. Don't get all high and mighty about throwing a hammer twenty years ago (which i think was a very commendable thing you did and id like to buy you a beer for it).

As for the money being right, that may of been what lured you over here, however I actually earn a bit less here than I could in the UK, I'm here because I like it, I like the people and the country with the mountains, the coast and the desserts.

Anyway, that's all gone off topic.

I'm off to the golf club to watch the rich whack there balls whilst I make the lesser waiting staff provide me with cold refreshments.
