as the title states the question, what would the definition of a Mendip Master Cave be?  :-\

A Cavern measureless to Man or Woman, that never get's discovered, and If it does get discovered then It's not THE Master Cave you were looking for and the quest continues .................................... For Ever

Thats an easy question.
A mendip master cave is What every mendip digging team is looking for,....... especially after 5 pints of Butcome on a saturday night.....It usually exsists just behind the next blocked boulder, squeeze or choked rift,in every dig site, and goes to cheddar risings or wookey...

The sensible reply (is that what you wanted?) is that a master cave is that part of a cave system into which passages from a number of separate cave entrances and entrance series feed. Swildons has two (I think) Priddy Green Sink and the main entrance, but otherwise there are very few. I suspect someone is thinking that the Upper Flood system is going to be called a 'master cave', but it will need several other caves to feed into it, won't it? When that is proven then perhaps UFS will become Mendip's first really significant 'master cave'?

Debate......

I would think if Upper Flood Swallet
continues to gain monster passage @ its present rate,
so far, no proved other inlets
but also almost no running water.
Perhaps the diggers are in abandoned upperseries, very, very fine formations.
Maybe the real, active cave lies below, who knows.
Anyway if it carries on getting more massive (now Mendips fifth longest )
and then when it has overtaken eastwater cavern for length, if it captures say Manor, Rhino, Charterhouse, G.B. Longwood August
it could then be justifiably be called a master system, especially if it goes other than Gough's.

Goughs and Wookey are technically Master Caves.

Why? They're technically resurgences. Surely the master cave is the bit that links swallets to their respective resurgence - often sought after - for ever! ;)

I agree with Hughie,
I also think that a master system is the middle bit, ie. not necessarily the swallets (if you can't get down them far)
also not necessarily the risings (if you can't get up them far)
but the long surmised & sought after, middle sections, Ie the largest most complex parts, where all the joining up takes place.

Master caves ? Mendip  :doubt: A master cave has to be at least half a KM long without having to anything other than a foot on the ground. It also should have a roaring stream in it.

I know this rule is right - because I just made it up and I am sure lots of others will agree with me :halo:

Naa - roaring stream

According to Julie H in her write up of the UF master cave:

"The streamway was a real treat in high water conditions and it certainly rivals many sections of Welsh cave stream passage in character in wet weather. "

Not the same as a proper NORTHERN MASTER MAINSTREAM PASSAGE that hurls boulders at you when it gets wet
