Hunter's Hole quick query...

A quick query...
Who looks after or owns Hunter's Hole, whom do we need to ask?
Is it locked - if so who do we ask for the key, in the pub?
If so what time do they open on Saturdays?

Ta!

Hunters Hole access/goodwill is via Roger/Jackie Dors at the Hunters Lodge Inn.

The cave is not locked.

You can phone for permission to visit if the pub is not open: 01749 672275.

IIRC opening time on Saturdays is noon although it could be earlier (I'm not a drinker and don't do pub opening times accurately!).

Why not visit the CSCC AGM at the Hunters Lodge this morning instead?.... you know it makes sense

Hi Chris, thanks for that.

>>CSCC AGM - not down this weekend just gone, but will be fairly soon, planning a bonus Saturday day-trip to check out a few sites.

If you need to know the Hunters Opening Times (and there is little that is more important for cavers), but don't want to bother Roger Dors, then why not call by the Wessex where our common room clock displays the status of the Hunters at all times. (it even compensates for sunday hours, but unfortunatly doesen't deal with lockins :D )

As a public service to all Mendip cavers, here is a picture of the Hunter's Time Clock.
Now you can easily work out whether its Hunter's time or caving time yourself.

The clock was presented to the Club by Phil Hendy clearly out of a concern to aleviate the stress and anxiety caused to members as they struggled with this difficult question on an almost daily basis.

Last time I did a trip down Hunter's, to let someone do their first SRT rigging,
there was this shitty rope starting at the first P bolt, tiny untied tail, this rope then plunged over the main shaft without any stopper knot, now I assume this is left in for a digging crew, who just fre climb down to the main hang, then put their ladder down.

In this cave, which is known as a place to learn srt/rigging
this is very unfriendly

In many circumstances, leaving equipment underground for 'convenience' is not just lazy, it's downright dangerous and irresponsible.

Ropes need to be cleaned. This can't be squared with leaving a rope underground for the next time.

If this rope was 'only' used as a handline, then it really makes no difference, especially if it's on a main route where others will find it and wonder what its purpose is. And anyway, a rope 'only' used as a handline could take your full bodyweight in the event of a caver slipping. In this circumstance it is taking as much load as it would take being used for SRT.

You cannot rely on a future group being suspicious of an in situ rope. You cannot rely on a future group having the brains to leave it alone.

If you're visiting Hunters' Hole be aware that there is a slab of rock about half a metre long which moves (but is not loose enough to fall... yet) in the roof arch between the main pitch and sago pot, just above the main pitch final rebelay; there is a slight possibility of placing a foot on it and dislodging it. Three other rocks next to it fell off immediately on touching them!

It will be crow-barred off during my next visit possibly today or tomorrow or Monday.

I recently removed this rope by cutting it off the chain of corroded krabs - the krabs will probably require a hacksaw in due course.

Aha!
I was in there in the spring - saw dodgy loking rope and ignoired it - rigged our own.
But the chap I was with was in there a few weeks ago, and he came out puzzled about the area around Sago's pot, just off the ledge/bridge.
This thread may well explain it!

actually a bit later than spring - as evidenced by this thread starting date. Doh!  :)
