I think you are getting confused   with Bleadon Cavern! (y)

Yes. You're totally correct. I am mistaken. I was thinking of Bleadon Cavern where I went in 1997. I haven't ever been to Hutton Cavern. You got me bang to rights for being wide of the mark. Well done.

If you mean the Access pages on the CSCC website and Bill Chadwick's Google Cave site, then the information is the same.

I update the CSCC site and also dump an XML file with all the info in it. Bill then sucks that into his site. So it all comes from the same place. Bills might lag a few days if he's not around to push the suck button.

Clever eh?

Well I went there in 1997 so it was open then.
I was told by Jim Hunt & Percy Baker,
that as far as they knew, nobody had been in it for nearly 150 years(except for them)
that was 12 years ago.
The two Nick's are apparently trying to excavate it but I have not heard that they have succeeded
They also made some derogatory remarks about doctor Stanton's information

So what is Hutton Cavern?

A comprehensive article by Dave Irwin - The Bleadon & Hutton Caverns, West Mendip - a reassessment (The hunt for the lost cave of Hutton and the confusion resulting from the naming of caves) was published in ACG Journal April 1998 pages 4 to 16.

Thanks Axbridgecaver. I think it is this the same article which is in the Belfry Bulletin, which I have read I The new Hutton Cavern is not Catcott's Hutton Cavern. Is the one on the CSCC map Hutton Cavern 3 or 4?

Going by the Grid Reference it is Hutton Cavern 3.

See ACG Journal April 1998 Page 5 *

Hmm, it would seems to be sealed.  :-\

Might have to give Mr. Richards a call to check the current state of play.

*BTW I looked up the reference in the ACG Occassional Publication No. 5 that Axbridge Caver handed to me at the weekend for a mere £5. It contains all the ACG Journals since the year dot scanned onto a DVD plus many many other goodies. Fabulous bit of work. Everybody should buy one.   (y)

Agree wholeheartedly; massively underpriced - if it had been commercially produced it would be more like £150+ (and still worth the money) - get yours now (includes 3 films on DVD, many hundreds of archive photos of Mendip caves and thousands of other bits of info: a genuine labour of love, done superbly).

So, to summarise: it's OK, get one.

Why didn't I think of that  :spank:

This Hutton topic, the Star Mine shaft and Eighteen Acre Swallet, shows the benfits of putting all the access agreements of an area in one place on the internet. Any wrong details will be picked up by pedantic, nit-picking, thorough cavers, and be changed immediately!

Once again well done to Cookie and the other CSCC guys for making such information readily available, putting it in a good format, and updating it as soon as there are any changes.

Maybe other areas could follow the CSCC's example?
