Ice and Diving in Castleguard cave

Hi folks -

Its not just that its a long way away, nor that you have to ski 20 kilometers to camp in the icy entrance of Canada's longest cave, or have Pine Martins try to eat everything or even freeze in the ice crawls and have the cave rip your gear to shreds.

How about diving at the end with your own design of re-breather and pushing the sump an extra 500m?

This Easter Martin Groves, supported by Al Braybrooke, Jules Carter, Gareth Davies , Rich Hudson and Phil Rowsell did just that.

Very well done!! A very arduous trip to the cave and difficult conditions getting to the sump- indeed. Telling is how long the sump has not been dove since David Sawatsky and John Pollack did in the 80's. Very few are up to the journey

congratulations!  I look forward to further publishing on this trip.

Very nice photos; there's one caption wrong tho - Sunway should be Subway.  I skied in with Martin to see the sump last year, and 'organized' the supporting Canadian cavers this year tho I did not attend myself (being in Africa at the time).

(Should this thread be in Expeditions?)
