    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

SITUATIONS VACANT: HANDYMAN/ENGINEER

The Council of Southern Caving Clubs has LOTS of Conservation/Access practical work to do - mostly little bits and bobs but some big(ish) stuff is looming.

The C&A Officer unfortunately doesn't own any tools or possess an engineering company, let alone a garage. Therefore ANY practical work is dependent either on someone else's equipment, knowledge, effort OR on bought-in contractors.

Since bought-in contractors are not cheap, it would be very helpful to find a TAME volunteer who would like fame and glory (and possibly the occasional pizza/crate of beer) in exchange for "job(s) well done".

It would be useful to have/own (or be able to borrow/hire) AND BE PROFICIENT IN THE USE OF:
outdoor welding kit/generator
angle grinder/cutting gear
metalwork tools/expertise
source of metal/other useful materials
P.S. I've got a REALLY GOOD portable drill.

So, if anyone feels they're tooled up and capable of delivering PLEASE get in touch via canda@cscc.org.uk

Location: Mendip
Begin: immediate
Salary: £ZERO
Expenses: all materials paid for + pizza/beer (negotiable)
Car: Yes (i.e. you should have your own vehicle!)
Fame/Glory: moderate-to-unlimited quantities
Why?: because you can and because you're a hero!

BTW, this doesn't have to be done by ONE person; if you'd like to get actively involved in practical tasks benefitting cavers where what you do has a lasting usefulness then this is right up your street; it could even be along the lines of a JFDI Gang ("Just do it") ... but with a purpose.

Hi Les: thank you very much for your selflessly kind offer to assist.

First, "We may have a little job for you, Brian".....

Do you (or does anyone) have some metal tubing/bar 1.5-1.75cm diameter x 1.20m length?

Then it needs to have a lump/stopper welded to one end and a hole drilled in the other end to accept/allow a CSCC padlock.

That's a small, simple job - but it will still take at least half a day to faff about over if I try (and fail) to do it.

This is relatively urgent!

will a bit of electrical conduit, 20 or 25 mm diameter, or a piece of 1/2 inch galvanised water pipe do the job (NOTE: 1/2 inch water pipe is its inside dimension, it is about 3/4 inch outside diameter)?  :-\

The water pipe sounds like it might just do the trick. Can you weld a lump onto one end and drill a hole in the other so it looks a bit like this?:-

Yes, the one in the photo needs replacing. It just needs to function rather than being an exact copy - reason is that the whole entrance will probably need reworking within a decade anyway.

If that site is where I think it is, I made the gate.  ;)

I'm sure we can sort something out.  ;) ;)

A nice bit of work, if I may say so, Les.  (y)

The remaining bars seem quite sturdy but given its location it's more a case of warding people off rather than being fort knox; the bar in the photo needs work since it presently doesn't function as intended. Can't say more in public.

Gosh, Treemonkey, thanks for your offer to help - you are a MOST useful person! I may have a little job for you soon too. I'll be in touch!

Whitelackington has already contacted me with regard to another project which he and Biff are going to sort out on behalf of CSCC (good chaps!).

Everyone else: please don't think for a moment that this means no-one else's offers of assistance aren't required! - on the contrary, there's plenty of stuff which needs doing but it gets prioritised on the basis of what can be done and what can be left to fester - if enough people volunteer then the list will expand to fit the labour available!

I have visited the site concerned and after some careful measuring (930mm long) and a long chat with the lady in the nearest house, and showing one of the local resident where the entrance is (she wants a trip now), I have fabricated a new bar from Stainless steel tube (my illicit supplier no longer keeps galve pipe). It is fab, so fab I might keep it for myself...

Just kidding, I will go and fit it soon.  (y)

Bar fitted last night, looks very good. I will have to do the rest of the gate in Stainless steel now.

Whilst inside we counted some flying mice, 12 Lesser Shoe Horses and 3 Greater Shoe Horses. They were all awake and flying around, and some were going outside to forrage.

The props are really in a poor condition, we should organise a day or two in the summer and go and replace some more. This would be a good CSCC project for quite a few people, good fun and we could have a barbecue and some beer on site after like we have done before.  (y)

I intend to float a motion (ooer, missus!) at the forthcoming CSCC meeting that regular C&A events be promoted - seeking volunteers and having a bit of nosh/drink as a "thank you". There are some projects which need manpower and other logistics and it will need a "team" - a sort of C&A-Team, if you like. Attendees will get a medal, a boiled sweet and at least two pats on the back. Hopefully it won't be the most exclusive/elite group on Mendip (i.e. not the usual team of one - Billy the No-Mates maestro). If you want to get on the C&A-Team, PM me and I'll add you to the list of the willing-and-able....
