Joining two Ikea desks

Here's one for the hive mind. I've bought two Ikea desks - rectangular plain, and want to arrange them in an L shape, removing one leg where a chair would go, and replacing it with a 2mm x 40mm x 10mm aluminium plate screwed in underneath. I'm not sure what Ikea use for their desks - I guess some form of chipboard rather than mdf. Given the former, what type of screws would be suitable, would I need a pilot hole, or are the better options using inserts?
