I know access has been lost - and the entrance has been filled over, but I was wondering if there is any documentation of the stuff in Outlands head quarry. I think it was Ben Bentham and Dave Gill who were digging there originally.

There must be some write ups/surveys/maps etc in some jounals some where, Eldon? TSG?

Pitlamp - you're always forthcoming with the references - any ideas.

Eyup Sam - I think the prime reference is in the same Eldon Journal as the Layby Pot write up; late 70's or early 80s.  It was that one which was printed to a high quality, with some superb large black and white photographs.  There is also a large Outlands Head survey with it - if memory serves me right it might have been drawn by Bill Whitehouse (to his usual superb standards).  I seem to remember Dave Gill was involved quite a lot at the time, so you could ask him?

Moving on a few years - wasn't there some controversy in the 80s about asbestos tipping in the quarry affecting the cave?  Ben was involved in this as I remember - and so was DCA, so you could see if someone like Jenny Potts would dig out the information?

And of course I bet Pete Revell would know a fair bit . . . .

Yes - remember the controversy myself when I was a kid ... B.R.A.D.D.A. - bradwell residents against the dumping and disposal of asbestos.

Cheers pitlamp - somehow knew you'd know.

I somehow knew it would be in an Eldon journal,  Oh the irony.

Does the TSG library have a copy of the eldon journals at the chapel??

Bog - dont suppose you can lay your hands on this one out of one of your box's.

The Eldon journals are among the best that Derbyshire caving has produced.  There is so much information recorded in them to help exploring cavers.  I'm always amazed that a lot of cavers don't seem to refer to good caving journals very much.  The sooner you get that Eldon library into a good home the better.  Seems to me there are four priorities.  In order these are:

1. Security - it needs to be where no-one will help themselves to items!

2. Longevity - it should be housed where items will not deteriorate.

3. Accessibility - members only?  If so, can others also have access to the information (as opposed to original material)?

4. Referencing - the icing on the cake is a good index, so that folk can very quickly find information about sites of interest.  This doesn't happen overnight and is a labour of love - but a rewarding and absorbing job for the right person.

Sorry Sam - not trying to interfere in your club's affairs; just chucking in a few ideas that may help.  Your library is excellent and it's such a shame if folk aren't able to make use of it - specially your own very active members!

No wories.

I think you've hit the the nail on the head with that list.

First prioirty I think is a safe dry building where the boxes can get unpacked - sorted etc. (I think some of them have gotten into a shocking state towards the end of their stay at bens).

Im really looking towards a suggestion from someone of an empty room somewhere in derbyshire that we can at least temporarily unpack and shelve the contents.

If we put the word around - then you never know what might turn up.
