Description by Jan Karvik. The 2001 Foot and Mouth Outbreak practically halted caving. The Miss Grace's Lane Diggers, more in desperation than in hope, decided to dig a shallow doline sited on one of the group’s land, at the side of Kelly's Lane. As they dug down through the clay they proceeded to sink a shaft, using the in situ cast concrete shuttering unit system perfected at Miss Graces Lane, to create a vertical 1m diameter concrete tube. At a depth of 12m, after just over 6 months activity on 7 October 2001, they broke into a low chamber sporting some formations, with a 3m high rising passage leading to an upper chamber. Marked `existing cave' on survey. Digging efforts to discover more were concentrated on following the roof and subsequent wall of the chamber, at the foot of the shaft breakthrough point. This allowed spoil to be hauled to the surface to conserve the initial chamber, but an early encounter with a mud filled aven, resulted in the diggers being over run with material and were forced to dump some in the chamber ( which has subsequently been mostly filled ), in the effort to bring the aven under control. A major breakthrough in the nearby Miss Grace's Lane Cave distracted the diggers for over a year. Recently [Christmas 2004] the diggers returned to the cave and added the necessary shoring required before any further digging could continue. The cave now consists of a 10 m concrete entrance shaft which drops 2 m into the original 30 m of cave passage. Then the cave drops 5.5 m down a 45 degree ramp followed by a 4.5 m concrete shaft connected by a short ramp to another 8 m drop, to reach the dig base at about -30 m. Digging continues at the base of the second shaft and at the end of a horizontal passage found/excavated at the base of that shaft. The digging team still meet most Wednesday evenings; last night was a concreteing/stabilising session at the bottom of the cave.
No mega breakthrough as yet, but work continues...
