Ken Chapel (s) ?

JAA

Well-known member
Having forgotten to ask Alan Speight today, does anyone know what became of Ken who used to frequent the YSS 20 odd years ago? I suspect probably long dead now.
I seem to remember he had a complicated laundry system involving barrels of detergent in the boot of his car and bumpy roads, combined with boiling his underpants in a saucepan in the YSS kitchen… Also demonstrating the fine art of using an upturned tea cup as an ashtray as “no one notices the stains that way young man”

Ken has passed away. He was one of life’s characters and a CPC member for decades. Email me directly if you want more.

Ken started using the YSS during the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 ( the YSS hut stayed open whilst the rest of the caving huts in the dales closed their doors )
His laundry habits are legendary as was his cabbage diet.
The smell from his laundry drying on the radiators and the smell of the cooking cabbage was a smell to behold??!?

Definitely a character! I remember the cabbage and (huge) underpants on radiators all too well. I also lost count of the number of times he told us "Cracking trip but you want a party of at least 8 for it, though". Didn't know about the boot being his washing machine though 🙂
