Knarsborough Caves

Most folk will have heard of Old Mother Shiptons Cave in Knarsborough. This isn't a "propper" cave a such' a geological non conformity. Knarsborough sits on magnesium limestone and the river Nidd cuts quite an impressive gorge through the town. In the past when i was "up to no good" I found a 3 to 4 foot diameter phreatic tube about 30 to 50 feet above the current river. And years ago a freind found a slip rift with soloutinal development in the lower reaches. Access to these is very tenuous.  There is also a vadose passage opposite the Lido. Has anyone else found anything in the area

Interesting. Whilst I knew that the unconformity between the Namurian and Permian is exposed in the gorge, I hadn't realised that Mother Shipton's Cave is associated with it. Can you expand on the relationship between the two? Or did you mean something else by "geological non conformity"?

Reputedly at least seven human skeletones were recovered from a cave in Thistle Hill quarry. I have chased up references for this and have drawn a blank but have a look at CAPRA issue 1 for the details.
i have a particular interest in the area so Pony please PM me with details of the slip rift you mention

Ah, possible a typo for "geological anomaly". I must admit that I have never been arsed  to visit  the place when I've been passing, so I have no opinion on it.

Swallowed the wrong pages of the dictionary this morning.
Showcave it aint. The Dropping Well that's associated with it is interesting. Its a spring with a high calcium content, a lot of tuffa and folks nik naks hanging in the water being petrified. One of my mates had a teddy bear done for her. It was bizzare. Like a pummice cast of a teddy
