Wot a load of bollox some people rite. Sorry been away from here for a day or two or could have killed this speculation stone dead.

The ladder hangs from one end of a thing called Whitsun Folly. It was first spotted by two of our guys in the 50s when they had climbed to a blind alcove on the other wall. They climbed across the roof to it & followed a small passage that just leads back into the Gorge just around the corner. It is shown on the Survey and is very boring. It is one of only two bits of GB I've never visited, the other being East Passage.
Its well worth the exposed climb up into it Graham. It has lots of formations along its length! . I'm sure Mr Whitelackington has done it as well!  (y)

Is there any use in caving for the things that climbers put in as protection as they climb - I think they are called 'nuts' and/or 'friends'?
Many of these suicide climbs actually look a lot easier than what rock-climbers seem to consider routine.

I know nothing about rock-climbing beyond a few feeble attempts many years ago - this is just idle speculation/curiosity on my part.

Yes - protection, as used in rock climbing, has been used underground, usually to investigate high-placed leads.

There are quite a few cavers who are also rock-climbers and vice versa.

;)
Graham,
you could make your New Year Resolution to climb up to East Passage
If I remember correctly, not been up there for about eight years or more,
I doubled a rope around something & descened on a figure eight.
Tis worth it.
