Should I be logging my dig trips in my records to provide an overall picture of my experience and if so should I log them together with an estimation of total hours spent underground or seperately?

A log of digging trips would help show your level of experience and interest in the sport nicely. I would however shy away from logging every trip to the same dig, perhaps just put in an estimated number of hours per month or something similar.
It's similar to instructors logging every single trip they do down the same intro cave (e.g. Carlswark) with kids, after a while there is no merit in relogging the same info, just a monthly or yearly summary.
Hope that helps.

Arguably such information could prove very useful indeed if there was need to subsequently check records for a particular date.

Indeed, but as a tool for an assessor a log of 100 trips of 2 hours to the same site does not reveal any more than logging the first few and block logging the rest. It may also save a few trees if your anything like me for Carlswark trips!
