I used to be part of a weight loss club with an online forum. Someone would post they had lost a pound and everyone in the club was expected to post a comment saying well done, if you didn't you came across as one of the surly members. I left because a thread of 30 posts were 1 posts of interest and 28 well done comments and possibly another interesting one so you had to read them all to make sure you didn't miss it, it took forever.
Often I want to acknowledge a post without replying, a good example is here

Simon has started a thread saying the CNCC minutes are available with a link. To post a comment saying thank you is a waste of the forum, yet if no one does Simon may think what's the point. I would like to acknowledge that I appreciate his post.
