Like / Dislike buttons, Karma, etc

Here's what I'd do. + - Karma was tried on this site a while back and demised due to abuse.. Simple likes are great for social fora and non specific chat.

If we take a subject such as dodgy bolts, or party in Bagshawe, IMO the point of those is to share info, if you feel strongly about it, type a response saying so - all is marginal so a few posts every now and then are a good thing from the site's perspective. Any likes their should be for Pete and co. who cleaned it up, not for the topic of (to extrapolate) party in Bagshawe Cavern....

Club fora - let them do what they want, their material will go into the canon and if SUSS for example want to have a social media type platform, why not. Again though, if a club had a post on 'got pissed, destroyed cave' then likes would be bad news.

Tackle, trips, etc. - IMO 'likes' etc. are not useful per se - e.g. if someone says 'my Speleotechnics light was dodgy' and 300 people agree and thus 'like' it, that wont help anyone. If someone posts a way of fixing said light and gets 100 likes, maybe 100 people fixed their light, 200 bought another (lets say a Duo) and it was bombproof and got 200 likes, which post is best? etc. etc.

This forum has been relatively 'quiet' for as long as I remember (i.e. from its inception) and I compare it with ukbouldering which took flight at the same time, and I guess there are a: fewer cavers than boulderers and b: cavers are less inclined to talk about the extraneous stuff (all this excepting the general ukcaving forum where we've seen allsorts). All this is to the good as I see it. It isn't a facebook analogue and nor should it be. It's become a place for solid information based on folk going underground and doing it, and if it stays slow as a result I'd prefer it that way. I also understand that cavers are people who also want to chat, make friends, cut loose and talk bollocks to each other, so likes and dislikes would be nice - but as I've seen on another forum I frequent where it's almost the norm to be an utter c*nt unless it's in the serious bit, it's just a free-for-all...

So, I'd either consider it carefully on the 'proper' fora (i.e let those results appear organically due to useful content which they do already), just do it all over and f**k it and let the users self-police it(hence let likes appear on BS threads) or not bother - or just keep it to the chat.

Alternatively create a facebook group for the chat.... if SMF can link into it it could be perfect...

However harking back to mmilner's strop... don't waste 3 hours and do nothing, and stick up 2 fingers to the countless 'professional cavers' who avoid the site.....
Can I use a  (y) now?

Facebook? I don't have enough free time to keep up with what's on this forum properly, let alone complicate life with yet another reason to stare at screens slavishly all day. I see it's even crept into BCRA's method of "communicating" recently.

Agree! (or, should I say "Like!").  There are enough ways to waste time on t'web without doing Facebook or <owl>Twitter too</owl>.
No strong feelings either way, but if a Like button cuts down on 'me too' posts, that's probably a good thing.  Especially in a discussion where different points of view are being aired

Can we also have a "throwing toys out of pram" emoticon please - it would save some people some time I think...  :tease:

It would be useful to have an option to like something, as has been said, to cut down the 'me too' or back-slapping posts that sometimes bloat a thread. I don't like posting well done, great, thumbs up, I'd rather be able to just like or have an option to show appreciation for the effort someone has expended.

I disagree with someone above that suggested if someone had 'x' likes per 200 posts then they are more useful. The person in question may post generally across the forum but only have a specialist knowledge about, say, LED lighting and only receive likes for those posts.

Dislike option, hmmm, very tricky, it would have its uses but there are people that would abuse it, so I'd go for a no on that one. You might get someone disliking all posts of someone they don't like, just for the hell of it. There's no real reason I see to dislike a trip report or photo etc and if you really see something you don't like then a post and explanation would serve the purpose far better.

'Like' and 'dislike' buttons would just turn discussions into a Beauty Contest. Being right isn't a democratic process.

This is where we are with the 'like' button.  Several forum users said that they would 'like' one.  As luck would have it the latest upgrade of the Simple Machines Software appears to offer one.  We have not yet seen how it works, but will be considering it.

Like buttons do have their place on the internet but whether ukCaving is the right place for one is yet to be seen.  I have received advice from other forum operators against them.  I'll wait and see the full upgrade and then maybe give it a trial.  I can't say fairer than that.  Now back to more trivial matters......

FFS. A 'Like'  button is simple to implement. (Like I said I have been doing web development for 14 years now.) And no I  wasn't having a strop as implied upthread, it just means you can do a simple mouse click to show your appreciation of someones posts on here.

There are some very knowledgeable peeps on here who I'd like to show my appreciation of, but just by clicking on a button.  I CBA with all the 'create a new post and insert a  (y) '  icon to like something, but I want to show my appreciation all the same.

Oh  yeah, to add to my eariler 'strop' an email would need to be sent out to previous 'likers' that more people had liked the original post. (Add another 20 miinutes.)

In all seriousness, don't bother with a dislike button because it'll be abused.

A like button would be nice.

It should be pointed out to droid that being right isn't a democratic process only extends to facts not opinions. The latter are a democratic process IMO.

See what I did there? :-[

Depressing but not surprising that the people posting on this thread have failed to acknowledge the above very amusing posts and ploughed on in the usual self-absorbed way.

Menacer, any chance of a "desperately trying to get head further up bottom" emoticom?
