IRC = Internet Relay Chat - Used to be a text only basic chat system.

Thanks. i was going to ask that too!

Is there a dictionary of these things anywhere? i might then find out what IIRC means... I guess one dayi might understand these personal computer thingies too, and those funny things people put at the end of messages on that mobile talking device thingy-wotsit.

I'm used to newsgroups, which I discovered around 1996, and at that time there was a lot of use of aronyms for the simple reasons that a) it takes some of the faff out of typing b) there weren't that many people posting, so everyone understood each other anyway.

Then I joined this, my first forum, got thoroughly told off for a tiny 'IIRC', and have behaved impeccably since.

But with all this discussion, and with getting into the habit of spelling out things in full again, I've come to realise that usenet itself has changed, lots more people are posting to newsgroups who don't understand the acronyms - some of them even (unknowingly) posting to newgroups via a web forum - and I've stopped using acronyms even in newsgroups.

ukcaving.com has changed my life

Theres a place for a small number of acronyms in my book - there are far too many to use them all - just a handful of common ones is fine..

Nice to see someone spelling words in full - almost as bad as over-used-acronyms is text-message-under-spelt-words like- u r 2 lazy 2 botha 2 spel propa!
ok, I use them frequently in text messages as theres only limited space for your money but emails and forums.. why.. laziness??

Could I ask people to kindly desist from using some of the less common abreviations unless they are going to provide a link to a complete dictionary of the terms.
To put it more bluntly: this forum should be open to all - stop being IRC elitists !
no...
I'm actually very busy and dont see the point writing out essays in 'proper' full english. Proper english doesnt exist other then whats defined here and now in our society which will be different tomorrow. If you dont know something you ask and along the way we will learn from each other. Whats wrong with saying, 'I am going 2 lunch'. The reaility is it takes more time and you focus on the context rather then scanning as people do. You have all read the fact the we just tend to read the start and end letter and from the context figure out the word. Deos this mkae sesne. lol

I'm not so sure i like that list of acronyms (though i'm impressed they found one for acronym itself!), those of us with short names get quite insulted. I appear to be a "SAM= Smart Assed Masochist".
