Lost Johns rigging

Quite a few people have asked me about this both on UKC and in person, so I wanted to make a dedicated thread to avoid any potentially hazardous confusion.

As mentioned in another thread, my ropes are currently on Lost Johns centipede route all the way to the master cave. Apologies for leaving this rigged and “claiming” the cave - but hopefully I’ve been fair in letting people know should they wish to use them.

Should anyone wish to use these ropes, having checked they are happy with the rigging first, the earliest I will be derigging them is Sunday 7th January - so any day up to and including Saturday 6th is fair game.

If you do use them, please try and leave them so the tail end isn’t being whipped about by the stream - if possible

Many thanks for letting all know about this. Just checking that the plan is still to remove the robes Sunday? I've booked it for Saturday, but it would be good to know if we could do Sunday instead

I’m actually looking at Monday or Tuesday to derig now as I’ve got a commitment on Sunday, so I can confirm I won’t have derigged it on 07/01/2024 but I can’t promise it’ll be there the day after (Monday).

Brilliant, thanks for letting me know - and (again) for letting us use the ropes. Having centipede pre-rigged opens up a few opportunities with alternative routes that we otherwise wouldn’t do with a small group

I know any sensible caver would do this, so I'm saying this purely for the benefit of making myself feel better: please do check the ropes are still there/usable before putting yourself into any position where you need them to get out the cave.

Of course! We're not going to rely on them, but will still check beforehand. Always better with a reminder too many rather than too few
