Map of Irish Caves

Hi

The UBSS website hosts Dave Drew's database of caves in the Republic of Ireland at http://www.ubss.org.uk/search_irishcaves.php

Each entry on that has a link (at the end of the line) to a pointer on a map of Ireland, similar in concept to those of Mendip and Yorkshire found elsewhere. It is also possible to mark up all the caves in one county by searching from http://www.ubss.org.uk/map_irishcaves2.php In the latter just don't ask for a county without caves or "search all" as it gets confused at null entries and falls over!

We have yet to enter all alternative entrances on the system, or surveys; these features will come in time I hope, but I would be obliged if folks on here could check it out and, especially, let me know of any errors. I know there are still some.

Caves north of the Border are not (yet) included, either.

In addition to the stuff mentioned above the UBSS site also has a Survex 3D model of the caves of Clare. This is very much a "work in progress" but it has reached a stage where it may be useful to some.

Go to http://www.ubss.org.uk/cave_survey_archive.php and download the caves of the Burren file at the bottom of the page.

The Survex 3D model has had a couple of updates since being uploaded. Although there are still some serious gaps in the dataset, it now has 55 km of cave passage on it.

I have uploaded a new version of the Burren 3d model. It's still nowhere near finished, but enough changes have been made to make it worth releasing.

Both Survex and Therion models are available from http://www.ubss.org.uk/cave_survey_archive.php

Thanks are due to all those who have generously shared their data with us, especially, in this case, Colin Bunce and Quentin Cowper.

Thanks guys.  (y)

Any chance the locations could be made into a kmz file?

Well, not by me 'cos I don't need one.

In any case, I'm not wholly happy about doing so as it means that we have to maintain it and issue updates as the master database is amended/corrected and that old and therefore potentially inaccurate copies remain in circulation.

Now with added entrances!

Must get the rest of the cave data on there.

I have just uploaded new Survex 3d and Therion lox models of the Burren caves to the UBSS website, at http://www.ubss.org.uk/cave_survey_archive.php#CoClare

Some of the specific caves are a bit 'iffy' and some data is still missing, but apart from the Coolagh River Cave, which still requires some work, just about all our surveys are now on this model.

I now need to try to track down any data from other clubs that isn't included, much already is, and I need to try to persuade the IOS to let me use a map overlay on the surface data on the Therion model.

Progress is being made.
