Marilyn lid pin thingy

The wire that stops the large pin being lost has rusted through. Currently the pin is attached by the split pin but it could be easily dropped. Anyone able to attached in a more permanent way in the near future would be great.

Thanks for mentioning this; I'll go take a look and then liaise with CPC friends with a view to sorting something out.

Pitlamp take if you take a few tools, screw drivers and small adjustable spanner with some stout string and you should be able to do a quick fix.

I went up there this afternoon to suss it out and take photographs for the person who designed the lid. I wasn't able to effect a temporary fix as I didn't have the right tools. (Your helpful post immediately above popped up just as I got back off the fell Sam.) I'll try and go back up over the next few days and sort something that'll do for the short term, time permitting.

Meanwhile - fellow cavers - there may be something to be said for using other entrances to the system meanwhile, at least until a post appears on here to let folk know the securing pin for the lid is attached once again (so it can't fall down the shaft).

A permanent fix will not happen overnight as there is some engineering needed. But the CPC is aware now and on the case, thanks to Sam. (The chain and R clip are getting ready for replacement as well; see picture.)

I have stainless steel cable , copper crimps, and a crimping tool to replace both the corroded steel wire and steel chain. Free
Let me know if it's useful.

Looks like the bolt that the chain and corred wire cable ends are attached to also needs replacing to assist with above repairs. Again I have lots of BZP bolts , so if the size is known.......

Hot dipped galvanised fixings would probably be a good idea in this instance.

Thanks alexchien (and georgenorth). I think there may be a plan now (and I agree about the other bits and pieces needing replacement as well). We'll bear your kind offer in mind if Plan A hits any problems.

Been up there again today (in the rain); the pin which keeps the lid open is now secured by a thin piece of perlon rope. It'll be right, until we get a new steel cable strop sorted as a permanent repair.

There's no need to avoid Marilyn BTW; enjoy.
