Used to be a frequent pizza and beer stop, but was never the same after the landlord had that car crash, seemed to be a food only place last time I was there, loads of empty tables all marked reserved and no where to drink a pint but standing up or outside, didnt bother going there again when there are so many other pubs in the town / nearby
Good selection of whiket though...

Yep, used to be a frequent stop in my early years of caving for food and beer. Last time I paid a visit tables were marked reserved and staff looking at us when we dared to ignore it because there was plenty of time before the table was due to be occupied. Never went back after that. That was a few years back so may have improved, but could never be bothered paying a visit to find out, won't bother whilst management team in either.

Same here. It's probably a very common story. I'd say the Helwith Bridge is the only decent caver's pub left...

Sounds like things have changed vastly up there (since the mid-80s)

I remember (hazily) many happy staggers back down to Mrs Morphets from Thornton after a 12" pizza and attempting to get from one end of the bar to the other on the ales.

I also have memories of great nights in the Hill. Closing time in the pub usually about 1.00am, then out to the barn at the back for another 3 hours of beer and great live dirty blues from whichever band was passing.

Always found the Heifer and New Inn a bit like the pub from American Werewolf!

How times have changed ......... 2 for 1 meals and a Wacky Factory or whatever.

You and me both Spikey.

That walk back to Mrs Morphet's always seemed to have more bends in it than the walk to the Marton.... ;)

Beer in the Helwith a bit on the pricey side though: wel over 50p a pint above the "norm" for my area last time I went in.

Does anyone remember the man with the plywood teeth who used to collect glasses in the Heifer?

Nope, but I do remember a fight between the landlord and landlady (I assumed that's who they were anyway - might have been random people) back in the early nineties when she was sat on his chest, hammering 7 shades of s**t out of his face with her fists at 1 in the morning.

I've heard the Marton Arms has closed and it's not known if it will reopen or not...

Anyone have any further information on this?

  THE MARTON ARMS REOPENED ON THE 12th of March

The new guys in there are very welcoming, friendly and are known to some of us already as they were at the Craven Heifer at Stainforth for a period just prior to Christmas until new management took over mid February. They are offering a good food menu as always and need our support at this critical moment as they seem to be working very hard to make the Martons the place to be. They have offered us the ability to use there car park this helps us and in turn will help them to get the place back on its feet. I would recommend anyone in the area to pop in they wont be disappointed.

It would be great if there was a bit of a field with just a tap nearby .. then we could camp and make a good night of it  :ang:

Hi folk, 4 freezing cavers descended this afternoon into Marton Arms after a soggy day in Bull Pot for a Black Sheep or two.  Is definitely open chaps, although no food and no roaring fire!! (Was snowing upon ascending first pitch and only thing I was looking forward to was thawing out in front of the log fire!!) Rob the new landlords assistant has assured me that it's all in hand and great food and fire to follow soon.......!! I wouldnt  recommend it at the moment to a cold, wet and hungry caver but they said we can use one of their rooms to change into dry kit over the winter season.

Tight Ropes All.

For good cheap beer (?2.50 per pint) and roaring log fires, I have to recommend the bunkhouse bar in Clapham

OK, I'm completely biased seeing as it's where I work, but it's one of the few places left where you can roll up with muddy faces and stand there dripping onto the floor and nobody bats an eyelid.

Where's that? (you can tell I don't get out as often as I should!)
