"NGR ST 55 / 5312.5131"
NGR - National Grid Reference, erm ok
ST - Grid Square
55/ - ??????
5312.5131 - 8 fig grid withing the ST square


So what does "55 /" mean? is it the OS 1:25k map number?

Wig used to write them that way in Mendip Underground, as well. I never did understand why. The most you need is: NGR ST 53125131.

Could it be anything to do with the "True Origin" and the Actual in use "False Origin" points of the grid system ?. Which is used to avoid having to give Negative Coordinates.

ST55 tells you which is the relevant 1:10000 mapsheet. From NGR ST 5312 5131

ah the old 1:10k map sheets which nobody (even the military) uses any more and you probably can't easily get hold of
