Mendip Cavers please help me!

Next week I am having an enforced visit to Mendip (visiting parents) and I thought I could make it a whole lot more bearable if I could get out caving. Trouble is, I don't know any Mendip cavers (normally cave in Yorkshire). If anyone out there is caving on Tuesday 30th or Wednesday 31st next week I would love to come along. I will be based near Frome but have transport. Perhaps you could persuade me that Mendip caves are worth doing, though I'm getting suspicious due to the number of posts on this forum from mendip cavers that presumably weren't underground at the time.
Hope you can help,
Trog

We could try but, truth be told, there aren't actually any caves here at all. It's all been a big lie; a leg-pull; a jape; we're frauds, the lot of us. Now you know. By all means visit Mendip but don't expect to go underground - "there's nothing to see here".

you could have a solo trip to goatchurch but it will be full of instructed groups  :)
rhino rift although i havent done it is supposed to be yorkshire like but my faviroute is swildons based in priddy. a compitant caver will have no problems doing this solo.

All of it? Probably worth saying which routes, bearing in mind the distinct possibility of getting lost in the upper main network (not entrance)...

And Trog - Mendip has the biggest underground chamber in the UK.

Thanks for all the comments, I really do believe that Mendip is hollow with caves, I'd just like to see one of them for myself.

Without meaning to be rude Trog, but I think you may have gone about your request in the wrong way. It sounded much like a dig at Mendip caves and cavers - albeit in jest. We like our caves - hence not much cooperation in the replies you got!

Wednesday night is digging night on Mendip - and probably a few caving trips going on too. We usually go digging - so we can't help you. Sorry.

Wednesday night is Cheddar CC trip night, I think this week we are having a good explore of the upper series of Swildons. PM me if you are interested.

Dear all,

Anne is right, I have probably gone about my request for caving partners in the wrong way. If I have upset or annoyed anyone then I am sorry. Yes, my comments were made in jest (and not even original). Anyway, thank you for your replies and comments. I may see you underground one day.

Now you have made me feel all guilty!

Sumpy has offered you a trip around the top of Swildons - which has got some nice bits in it! Alternatively we (as in me and Hughie) can't show you an impressive cave, but we can show you an impressive dig if all else fails (Templeton). Both the Templeton lot and the Cheddar lot go to the Hunter's afterwards where you may well get the opportunity to meet a few other forum abusers!

Trog -

Wednesday 31st - Swildons to Sump1 and back (I haven't cracked sump 1 yet).
7pm at the WCC hutch, You on?

Might be able to make it earlier but wont know till closer the day.

Then we go to Hunters were I will have organised a load of mendip cavers with lasers and shit.
Trog just checking you can climb a 20ft free hanging ladder?
It will be wet (ish compared to Yorkshire I am sure)

All is well that ends well. Trog went caving with Darkplaces and met both me and Hughie (after our dig) and also Sumpy and the rest of the Cheddar gang after their swildons trip. At the Hunters of course. It is so nice to have ukcaving as an introduction to meeting new people that we would never have spoken to otherwise.

Yes  ;) Good couple of evenings trips! Hopefully Trog liked our Mendip caves and got to know some of the er people...

Tuesday Trip report is here: http://www.c**tplaces.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6891

Wednesday's trip report will follow soon. In short we hacked down to sump1 to peer at it then back again. As usual I had to haul my slow ass self about.
Thanks for carrying the bag Trog  (y) lol..
