Mendip Caving Video! (Inc Swildons, Upper Flood and Lionel's)

Hello!  :D

My club took a pop into Mendip this weekend just gone and tested out some new hardware (GoPro), we we were wondering if these "super" "do it all" cameras could handle some underground bangs and scrapes. See for yourself, the video includes (in order) Upper Flood, Swildon's and Lionel's at the end! Plymouth University Adventure and Expedition Caving Weekend 04-07/05/12

Excuse the music, I edited the video at 4am!

Any comments etc in regards to sump bailing techniques for an awkward UF sump would be good, i.e. what's the take on 1 tonne building supply bags and some tarpaulin and some flexibuckets?

Cheers guys!

If you want people to watch you do need to edit your videos - please. I gave up when I saw UFS out of sequence and incoherent. Most videos only need to be a a few minutes long and 26 minutes is just too long. I am not normally critical but the number of people producing videos is proliferating and if you want people to take a look make it short and snappy or informative. And yes I am starting to make my own so am learning the pitfalls.

Thanks for the advice!

My first time doing any sort of real video editing on this scale, most other videos I've made (not caving) are more to the point as the raw footage is much shorter, I removed a fair few hours of footage from this already but I liked it all so much I didn't want to chop it too much haha!

The main reason for posting it on here was because it was more a try out of the GoPro underground, but was also a prowl through of the weekend to be shown on a screen (potentially) at our clubs freshers fair (so longer run time is better as we could leave it on), so for its purpose it should be fine. UFS sequence probably got mixed up as the video editor had the raw file names mismatched however it's target audience won't know UFS anyway.

EDIT: The main light source was a Rude Nora on flood setting (seemed to give the best results anyway).

Hey Josh, I thought the whole thing was really different and entertaining! (Watched it all!) The music was also very cool too! I have heard the first and last track before but can't rmbr who they are by or what they are, so a full track listing would be great for a music lover like me... First D&B and Piano, then Violins and Dubstep on the 2nd track, great stuff, lol.)

Thanks Mel  :)

The track listing in order of occurrence is as follows:

Clubbed to Death - Rob Dougan
Crystallize - Lindsey Stirling (I doubled this one over to be twice as long)
The National Anthem - Radiohead
Fat Lip - Sum 41

Glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, it is a bit long, and a bit jerky with the speeded up stuff, but I really liked it. Well done.
Do you really have to bail the UFS sump with a plastic bag?

Thanks! Well we're debating other methods at the moment, the bag really was just a "lets give it a go" since its so easy to carry and we were on a fun trip anyway. More serious thought is going into flexi-buckets and a builders tonne bag (lined with tarp etc) as there's not much space down there to bail it to.

I didn't want to be offputting but I have found stuff I have posted when seen after an interval needed tightening up. I also agree that sometimes for a particular audience they want to see as much as possible. One example is the raw edit I did of a rescue practice in st. cuthbert's in February which is not really up to much except for those participating or who want to get the flavour of a rescue.

I'd like to see that footage actually, do you have a link for it at all?  :)

I missed out one track actually, it was the one just as we entered Swildon's Three, Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna.

I liked the high speed tour, saves me going there lol. The sump diving is epic, it looked like you were using breathing equiptment but the guy infront was not, even for double up speed the dives seemed to take a blooming long time!

P.s. the first track is from the Matrix.

The sump diving was very good fun!  ;)

The guy in front is myself, my friend Mike had the camera, he was indeed using SCUBA. The dives did seem quite long, felt much quicker! Didn't want to exert too much energy though! :D

Just watched the video with my 8 year old on this wet and miserable day - she wants to go to Upper Flood now!
