Thank you for your interest, Brains. Things are moving. My sister died suddenly two years ago - I had been her carer and could now undertake major commitments elsewhere so I passed the text to Lynn Willies who kindly commented extensively on it. Then worked it over thoroughly and, following a pithy demand from Lynn last Jan to get shifting, I handed the text over to the PDMHS editor. Diagrams still need to be done, a major job. Have heard nothing much since except for a request to assist financially in its publication (to which I agreed).
Just want it done, has been a millstone round my neck since c.1978 when Trevor Ford told me to do it as a PhD.
Lynn has now asked me to do three more definitive area histories but I suspect that life is too short for that, though I would if I could.

Thanks for the update... So. Diagrams and into print! Excellent news.
And the other areas?.... No I will be happy just to see this one in print 😊

Sorry to hear about your loss though 😢

Currently PDMHS are aiming for it to be a double issue of Mining History going out in the second half of 2024, with a larger than usual print run to cover interest from non-members.

Thanks to all for the hard work that goes into getting an idea into a document. I am sure it will be high quality, and please put me down for one. As an aside, ever since cutting my teeth on old hardbacks of LOTR, I do hope it has lots of fold out maps to scrutinise.
Thank you History Trog, AR, PDMHS and anyone else that has had a hand in it :D

I have been asked to write books on Cromford, Middleton, and Wirksworth, to help the Mining Museum when it has moved to the National Stone Centre site. Lynn tactfully described it as "emptying your brains before you die".

At the moment, I am compiling a short report on mining in Bradford Dale, Youlgreave. I was walking along the dale on my way back to Matlock, recollecting the work Andy Hayes and I did there during the 1960s, and thought it would be a good idea to sort something out because that area has been totally neglected by historians.

That's a nice way of putting it! Don't forget to send me any photos that need work too ;)

Incidentally, me and Chocolate Fireguard have just been down the riverbank, and it appears that Willersley Castle have completely closed access to their part, and a sign saying 'No Climbers' has been installed (coming from the north side downstream) - presumably this means access to Nether Hagg Mine (Dido's Cave) is now also lost. We're making further enquiries (as DCA).

Had noticed the developments at Willersley Castle. Was there last week with my old mining friend, Andy Hayes, with whom we used to do all the surveys. First time he had been back to the Matlock mines for over 45 years - everything has got worse including us.
