I've just heard that Paul Deakin passed away last night. Another sad day for Derbyshire and indeed, much further afield.

I heard this morning - a real shame. Paul documented the Peak District underground like no-one else before, and although I've only seen a tiny proportion of the huge body of work he produced, I've always been impressed and somewhat influenced by his photographs, his surveys and his total dedication to the cause. Irreplaceable  :(

Condolences to his family. I know he'd been ill previously but had been clear for some ten years or so.

Great bloke, photographer & caver.

Thoughts are with his family and friends :( I have 3 lovely prints of his from the Berger on my wall. A great talent has gone from us

Paul was a good mate of mine. He took me on my first caving trip and we did lots of photographic and serious trips together. The last trip we did was a Berger photo trip in 1985 and I last saw him at the Eldon 50th in 2007, when he told me he was in remission from bowel cancer.
What a shame.

He was one of the cave photography greats. His photos of the Berger were some of the best I have seen. Sorry to hear this and my condolences go to friends and family.

Its the Gaping gill with a huge waterfall that I mostly think of for a Paul Deakin photo, the one  on sale in Bernies.

He took a group of us into Engine Vein earlier this year and personally made sure that I saw all of the best bits. Nothing but good memories.

As Goydenman says "feels like an end to an era"  I remember meeting Paul, just the once, it was in the Peak Hotel, then the cavers haunt, in Castleton, in the early eighties.

That single occasion had a lasting impression..... not only was this guy a very accomplished caver, he was also an extremely  pleasant nice person.

Paul's cave maps and meticulous research were always appreciated as an aid to enjoying caving in the Peak District... and pointing the way to future exploration...

And of course he and his mates in the Eldon did the same in South Wales

Thank you Paul for your lasting contributions ............
