Mountain Biking Underground

Perhaps a timely reminder to posters old and new about keeping things civil?

http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php/topic,1872.0.html

Mind you, I've seen a lot worse than this elsewhere!

And as for what Graham posted, read it carefully (I assume it's the sentence "No, but's let keep it as an arse about in delicate caves and we'll rip your balls off issue." that is in question.)

Well? If you "arse about in delicate caves" you will probably get all you deserve.

Ride your bike along a passage doing no harm and I don't suppose anyone will raise much more than a smile.

aaaarrgg grim! You had the sensible, moderate people behind you till that comment. I know the prolific posters can be annoying with condescending words and righteousness pouring out of every orifice. These people (they know who they are) have to learn to share and to accept many people exist unlike them who would also enjoy things and are not automaticly out to destroy. They are termed Trolls they have nothing better to do then moan, berate, express views over and over again as if they are more important then everyone else, when they are not.

Cave diggers being the worst culprits - your right, they are. People taking something natural and smashing, blowing up, cracking etc have totally no leg to stand on when preaching about others doing damage, period, totally, no come backs, no answer. Any cave digger who expressed a negative view should withdraw posts as they are expressing Double Standards of biblical proportions. Go on ride that bike down that hole.  the right hole  ;)

Thanks for the demonstration of how a prolific poster behaves.

DarkPlaces is currently 9th in the top ten most prolific holier than thou posters.  ;) :tease:

We did underground biking a few years ago, lowered said bike down an airshaft into a substantial underground place somewhere south of here ;)
It was rather good fun, no harm was done and a splendid days entertainment was had.
Pick your place and have some fun, no foul commited ;)

I think there's a possibility of mixing up some logic here.

Using digging techniques to discover virgin passage will involve damage to result in progress.

To subsequently spread mud over the resulting passage (by whatever methods) remains unwelcome.

To state that the second type of behaviour is justifiable because of the first does not stand analysis.

A (crap) analogy would be to say that it's OK for builders to tread all over your nice carpet since they wore wellies when they built the place.

Someone mentioned a video, thats a good idea. When you get it done grim- get us a good bit of footage, or at least some good piccys  (y)

As for the drain driving... hmmm, are there any that big in the UK? It does look a bit like one of the proudest moments of my life so far... getting a 17 seater bus up to the very end of the lane to alum pot (right to the gate) and then executing the bestest ever ***point turn. I was damn proud. Didn't touch a wall once.

Now i await my lynching from a green-lanes conservationist.

Goughs Cave has a nice smooth concrete floor and enough headroom to ride.

These days diggers clean up after themselves. Wonder whether mountain bikers do?

Graham, I do wonder how many half forgotten dig sites there are around the country, littered with the remains of old buckets, bits of piping, broken, rusty tools and the thick oozy mud they seem to attract? (Maybe there aren't any!). I'm sure the idea is not to ride the bike around a pristine cave. I'm sure we could all identify a few mine passages that might not be objectionable. I know the local lads near to Cwmorthin would ride their quad bikes into the entrance adit...maybe explains the collapse!

Well they can't do that now since The freinds of Cwmorthin put a gate and lock on the lake level addit.
http://www.cwmorthin.co.uk/

Somehow I doubt that, its got more to do with the sate of the rotting timbering in the addit and the unsability of the spoil heap over the top. Although "locals" are tearing up the ground outside the mine by turning it into a makeshife motocross loop!

Just a bit of 'tongue in cheek' Wormster, & you're right, DP & the Friends of Cwmorthin did a great job. A suicidal run down one of those inclines would no doubt be interesting and something to talk about, if you lived to tell the tale!

I am sure there are many, which is why I said "these days". Conservation awareness has improved amongst most sections of the caving community in recent years.

Try the one down the valley side from Croesor or the one at the head of the valley, its near vertical at the beginning and there'a a fence half way down.

Graham, let me apologise for the personal remark, i'm very sorry and feel foolish.I extend that apology to anybody else who found it offensive.

Thanks everybody for the help you have given,i'm going to get google-ing with some of the mine site references, excuse my ignorance but most names sound Welsh. The culvert in local Halifax sounds good, but the thought of rats..
Above Todmorden, near Halifax, there is an alleged rideable mine tunnel, but true to all these things, nobody knows quite where ("near the observatory on the Bacup road"),riding friends from Tod. are walking their kids in the area on a Saturday, every Saturday!
I will keep you informed on the outcome of this little adventure. With a bit of luck X'mas will bring about an opportunity.
If I don't post again on this subject, have a good X'mas and most of all: have fun!
