Well we descended to Red river this evening and back out, The Air feels a little thin in Places, Eg. the Rift after the crawl from bottom of shakes, then very slight feeling thin air in Red river passage and other than that it felt Ok to myself and the guys with me.

Note that the 'bad air' situation always seems to be worse in the summer and then gradually gets better during the winter and early spring.  Temperature of outside air does affect it so it will probably get gradually worse again during next summer and early autumn.

Hopefully the new lid installed by DCA with its ventilation system will ease the problem somewhat.

Don't know what this ventilated lid is about -
Was at Nettle yesterday and the lid is categorically unventilated.
Nice lid though.
Did a Beza-Elizabeth exchange and no signs of bad air anywhere.

From what I hear from people it's ok now but caution would still be recommended in the hight of summer

On a trip down Nettle on 16th. August Alan Brentnall used a Crowcon Gasman CO2 meter to check all the sites which had been checked in October 2012 and compare CO2 levels.  He found all underground sites with considerably reduced readings this time; e.g. none higher than 1.55% this time, as compared with 2.41% last October - both maximum readings came from the foot of Beza.

Not sure what effect the weather would have had but normally readings are higher in summer and start to reduce during the autumn.  So maybe the venturi effect of the cover over the hole in the lid is working as it was hoped it would: by sucking air out of the system on windy days as the wind passes across the hole.

Time, and more readings will tell.  Many thanks to Alan and Christine for taking the readings and passing on the information.

DCA Hon. Sec.
