before anyone get to excited nothing substantial has been found. its about 4-5 meter long, and ends in what look like a flowstone blockage. some questions its not on the mendip cave registry, so can i name the cave. and what are the prospect of either banging or capping the flowstone or is it likely to be blocked for a long way i can feel a slight air flow but can't tell where its coming from.

If you found it you get to name it.  (y)

And survey it, and photograph it, etc...

As to the prospects, nobody will be able to advise on that without seeing it, but if you have a draught then it may be possible to get past the blockage to further passage. It is normally difficult to bang flowstone and virtually impossible to cap it. Flowstone absorbs the shocks from such techniques and they cause very little damage. It isn't impossible though.

Need to take a look really.

Once you've named it, t'would be nice if you'd let one of the MCRA registrars know so that we can enter it on the Registry.  :)

have not quite decided what i will name it, but as soon as i do will let the registrars know.  also what about gps location does anyone have something to do this with, as i don't have the means to do it.

In the Good Old DaysTM We'd locate the site on a map & read the NGR off from there.  :coffee:

LOL

It might be more accurate to do that anyway as tree cover will degrade the GPS signal.  :sneaky:

you beat me to it Les, anything found on mendip now is a miracle. for a place that has been so widely dug it is amazing to find anything new

Chris, I can think of a number of very interesting sites on Mendip that have never been dug. There is still a lot to find on Mendip.  (y)

Ah, but they have to be in sight of the Hunters chimneys and have a digging tree in the depression or they're not worth looking at.  :tease:

so if there are so many interesting sites on mendip why is nobody digging them. it seem to  me that people are so reluctant to talk about anything new found on mendip. just thought i would add i bit of news to  the uneventful  mendip forum, is i just me or is there nothing else being found on mendip apart from charterhouse and upper flood. why doesn't the mendip have something like a digging week to get people involved in these interesting sites, and find more cave on mendip this has been done in other part of the country with good results

Is that the official rule? Dang! With that, all those holes we were poking into in KY would be caves, not just holes! lol

the wikipedia definition of a cave

A cave or cavern is a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Some people[who?] suggest that the term cave should only apply to natural cavities some part of which is in total darkness; however, in popular usage, the term includes smaller spaces like sea caves, rock shelters, and grotto's

and according to wikipedia a hole is

A hole is an opening in a solid

Sometimes they are sites where it is tricky to get permission to dig.

That's a touch unfair, finds get mentioned on this very site.

Well, to be fair, those two were very big finds which somewhat drowned out the others

'cos nobody has organised one? 'cos most teams dig weekly (or twice weekly) anyway?

Some what irrelevant but does every sink and resurgence(in limestone) on the mendips now have an associated cave?
