North Wales - Tourist / Show Mines Recommendations

Hi all

I'm off on a friends / family break in Wales next week, and one of my friend's kids (4) has developed a bit of an interest in mines / geology / machinery. He does have a minor walking issue, so that combined with my lack of familiarity, means I am looking for a show mine that might be interesting for him rather than a mine "au natural".

Any recommendations? If there are any with still "working" mine equipment or the like that would be great. We will be located around Prestatyn but will be happy to drive out.

The Sygun copper mine is a well known (to some) tourist attraction. https://www.syguncoppermine.co.uk/

Going off topic a tad - I'd recommend a trip on the Welsh Highland Railway which passes the foot of Eryri/Snowdon on its way to the spectacular Aberglaslyn Pass and down to the sea at Porthmadog. If you catch the train at Waunfawr it will save a lot of £££ and you still get the best bits.

For a four-year-old the Great Orme Bronze Age Copper Mines museum would probably be your best bet. There's car parking on site, the walking distances are short and there's no age limit. There's also a good AV presentation before going underground - and the underground tour is self-guided so you can go at your own pace. All in all it would probably suit the attention span of a young child.

In addition on the Orme there's the Great Orme Tramway and the Cable Car, so there's plenty going on there.

(Declaration of interest: I have no involvement with any of the above but I do know the manager at the Mine Museum.)

For geological interest, the pillow lava on the approach to LLandwyn Island, Newborough beach, Anglesey. The folded strata of the rocks at South Stack are interesting as well.

Dinorwig quarry is good, park at Dinorwig bus terminus and follow the footpath from the terminus up into the quarry (5 mins walk, just follow all the people carrying climbing gear), if you can find them there's a wide variety of old boilers, engines etc. (I can dm you with further details if you want). Llyn Padarn below is a pretty good place for a swim afterwards too if the weather is good, and spice of Llanberis do a great curry (don't listen to the reviews about rude staff, they just don't have patience for rude customers). Pictures on google do not capture how large the site is, you could easily spend all day wandering round the old levels if you were so inclined.

Explore Stone Science Museum on Anglesey, Sygun Copper Mine near Beddgelert, or Great Orme Bronze Age Copper Mines museum in Llandudno for family friendly mine and geology experiences.
