One really important question remains unanswered

But then you lose representation for your area - who's going to decide which of them actually get in?

surely that's where local councils come into it (that again should be done on PR)

Other than banging on about how local he is all the time, I'm not convinced my local MP has ever actually done anything to represent my local area.

Every time I email him about local or national issues, I get some patronising crap and sticking 100% to the party line  o_O

Pete do you live in the same town as me? Although mine's not even local, I actually doubt if he's every even visited the area, but he's got a blue ribbon on so it doesn't really matter what his views are or even if he does anything.

This sums up Chris' point quite aptly though - at least about ministers. It's Friday, so it's Marina Hyde day:

"Everyone else in this country knows that if they were formally found by their employer to have bullied people in the workplace, they would be put out of work. Yet the home secretary ? the home secretary! ? will not meet this standard employment fate. She gets a vote of confidence from the prime minister. Downing Street clearly decided it would be worth having to eat shit for a couple of days rather than look ?weak? by sacking Patel, and imagined the story would die down swiftly enough for them to have ?got away with it". But they haven?t. Every case like this chips away at the remaining vestiges of respect people have for politicians. Every instance of someone ? simply because they are a politician ? getting away with behaviour that people know wouldn?t be tolerated at their own workplace erodes something much bigger than trust in the individual politician."

I don't think so Josh, but they are (mostly) all the same...

Our guy is actually from the local area; it seems to be him only selling point.

It always amazes me that pretty much every flyer we get though the door is about how he's "defending" the local area from developers, but last time I checked that was a council issue, not a government issue (and I work with developers, so I hope I know). He's never once mentioned a national policy issue in all his propaganda. It's presumably easier for him to sell himself as a local councillor, or better still a lobby voice to the local council, rather than dealing with the real issues facing the country...

Here's the footage of the eye testing one's departure:

It'll be nice when all this is properly made available to those of us that actually have paid for BBC stuff with the licence tax.

Spitting image was originally on ITV (& the recent US election special was shown on that channel)

It was pure joy watching Priti Patel being 'interviewed' by Vicki Young on the news tonight. She looked like she was sitting in a pool of her own piss, but good manners dictate that she must pretend that she wasn't. She truly is the fakest politician - nay person - currently available for popular viewing. It's an object lesson in how not to do it. Give it a week? I look forward to Allegra Stratton's upcoming bar-chart presentation on honesty perception amongst the public. Possibly back on Peston.

I have significant experience of listening to self-important tall white guys disparaging their small Asian female boss, so I can well imagine what actually went on a few years ago.
So yeah, I?d cut her some slack probably the first time.

It's scarcely the first time though. Her secret visit to Israel also broke the ministerial code and should have disqualified her from ever holding public office again, and Teresa May was smart enough to boot her out, but then the corrupt lard-arse bent the program again and brought her back, against advice. If being small, female and Asian are sufficient grounds to let her off, never mind her use of 'unintentional', then we really are in a strange place. I don't doubt that the civil service might be somewhat internally prejudiced in these matters, but I'm not. Her problems are in her head, not the way she looks. And last time I checked she wasn't too keen on immigrants, especially ones who might be small, female and Asian.

Small people can be bullies.  Asian people can be bullies. Females can be bullies.  Bullies are bullies.  Priti Patel is been proved to be a bully.  Why let her off because she female Asian and small.

I think Patel labours under the illusion she can fire people who are useless, don?t do as they are told - or indeed actively try to get you removed as in this case. What she needs to understand is that it is the Civil Service we are talking about, it?s what they do.

Sir Philips problem was that this was the second woman in a row he was knifing. Not a good look.

Let's not forget that a civil servent received a no liability payout of ?25,000 from the government after allegedly attempting suicide after being shouted at by Priti Patel. There's a lot more detail on that story if you're willing to look.

Well, she does appear to have a serial people problem issue. I'm not suggesting anything, come to your own conclusion, there's plenty of information in newspapers and online, and I'm sure anyone can take onboard or ignore information to fit in with their world view, or indeed handle information without prejudice and come up with a balanced view. We are all sorts. It may be that's she's just lacks empathy? Anyway, Michael Gove, now he's a proper old fashioned ***t.

They are all running a policy decision to push everything as far as they can, almost certain in the knowledge that the checks and balances that are supposed to be in place will not be implemented, largely due to the 'stunned' effect that Trump has relied on - the system just can't get that someone is blatantly bent and pretty much admitting it, and daring someone to do something, which they won't because they daren't, their own career depending on it. The inbuilt deference to 'noble authority' in their core base of well-off middle-aged people helps, as do the shameless nods to poor and angry mobs lurking in the background - both here and in the US. It's cheap and nasty authoritarianism, but implemented by people without the talent or the personal charisma to pull it off properly, hence the awkward 'interviews' and endless 'supportive statements'. No doubt Andrew Marr and Sophy Ridge will have more of them in the morning. But I think they are collapsing under the sheer weight of their own incompetence and hubris. Brexit should finish them off, but it may do the same to us - unless of course it gets postponed again, for 'practical reasons' - like a pandemic in full flow.

'Then the words don't fit you,' said the King, looking round the court with a smile. There was a dead silence.

'It's a pun!' the King added in an offended tone, and everybody laughed, 'Let the jury consider their verdict,' the King said, for about the twentieth time that day.

'No, no!' said the Queen. 'Sentence first?verdict afterwards.'

'Stuff and nonsense!' said Alice loudly. 'The idea of having the sentence first!'

'Hold your tongue!' said the Queen, turning purple.

'I won't!' said Alice.

Off with her head!' the Queen shouted at the top of her voice. Nobody moved.

'Who cares for you?' said Alice, (she had grown to her full size by this time.) 'You're nothing but a pack of cards!'

At this the whole pack rose up into the air, and came flying down upon her: she gave a little scream, half of fright and half of anger, and tried to beat them off, and found herself lying on the bank, with her head in the lap of her sister, who was gently brushing away some dead leaves that had fluttered down from the trees upon her face.

What surprises me is that no-one else in that party has been accused of bullying... generally 'bossy' behaviour is perceived differently when received from male and female superiors, and there are either hard-wired or strong cultural tendencies to take authority from male figures and prefer non-threatening female figures (for example, why are all voice assistants like Alexa, Siri etc. by default female?).

If someone's been found guilty of bullying and breaching the ministerial code, then they should be out. I just hope (but doubt) that the rest of that miserable bunch are being held to the same standard...
