Online caving logs

Hi all,

I've always had a caving trip log on my website which I used to update manually from a spreadsheet, which was quite cumbersome. In answer to this, I've spent the last month or so developing a website which streamlines and automates this process. I've finally got a workable version, and I've called it caves.app. You can see an example of what it produces by viewing my public profile on there: https://caves.app/u/andrew/.

As you can see, it generates a nicely formatted page with a list of your caving trips, which anyone can browse, as well as view some fun statistics. It also has the option to keep some or all of your trips private, as well as the ability to export all of your data to a spreadsheet format at any time. In the future I would like to add the ability to see trips of people you have added as friends, comment/"like" them, and produce full rich-text trip reports hosted on the site (like a blog).

I developed this entirely for my own use but I thought I'd share it here in case anyone wants to have a look or share any (welcome) feedback. You can have a play around by going to https://caves.app/ and creating an account (email verification required). I'm not making any money out of this, just keen to share my little project. I eagerly await being told that pen and paper is better!

Hm, very interesting . . . particularly your 11-hour epic in Lancaster Hole on 18/12/21; what's the story behind that?

I wish there was a good story to tell but unfortunately there isn’t! We hadn’t been through the high level before and really took our time looking around and route finding on our way to Stop Pot, had a picnic and wandered back! Thanks for taking the time to look.

Great app! Really enjoyed adding my trips and seeing all the stats

I've not had a chance to properly play with this yet, but I love the concept. Would you consider open-sourcing it so that others could self host (I'm a bit precious about hosting the data that I care about)?

It’s fully my intention to open source it at some point, but I think I’d like to polish it a bit more first. I’m planning a rewrite of some sections. However - you’re more than welcome to be on the GitHub repo - I’ve sent you a message about it (on Discord).

Reading some of these great “tech” threads (rope cutting, online log book apps, flood data etc etc) makes me realise how little IT I know 😱😂😂. It all sounds like a foreign language. Keep up the good work anyway 👍
